"INKHEADS TOP 13 CULT CLASSICS"

This is HALLOWEEN this is HALLOWEEN-HALLOWEEN-HALLOWEEN, Its that day of the year were ghoulish party's go all night, kids hunt for candy and all night HORROR~THONS are looped in all the good cable channels. I love everything about Halloween. It marks the start of the holidays as well as I just really fucking like HALLOWEEN. Its the best time to sit and watch all the cool most HAUNTED locations TV specials. But I'm gonna do something a little different for our site not the same rehashed Top Horror movies thing everyone's done to death, I'm gonna pay homage to those other films not so well known or talked about, I'm gonna list our favorite lesser known guilty pleasure cinema we around INKHEAD HQ love.
So I present to you "INKHEADS TOP 13 CULT CLASSICS"! BWHAHAHAHAHAHA! Ok maybe not so original but whatever its Halloween and we have a quota to meet so Atario and I sat around and hammered title after title of our favorites. It was a bitch to narrow them down to our favorite 13 but we finally got a nice enough list with plenty of variety in the B category. These will be the first tenants to occupy the newly formed CULT VAULT!

#13.LEVIATHAN (1989)

"Welcome to your worst nightmare, welcome to Leviathan" That was the tag line to this 1989 cult underwater monster flick starring Peter "Murphy" Weller aka Robocop. Him and the gang are deep sea miners who find an old Soviet Wreck and bring some mutant thing on board .... well its kinda like "The Abyss" mixed with "The Thing" only cheaper.

#12.DR.GIGGLES (1992)

The psychopathic son of a mass-murdering doctor, escapes from his mental institution to seek revenge on the town where his father was caught. Larry Drake( the bad guy from Darkman and Darkman 2) plays Dr. Giggles.

#11.NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986)

"It's MILLER time !!!"
In 1959, an alien experiment crashes to earth and infects a fraternity member. They freeze the body, but in the modern day, two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which proceeds to infect the campus with parasites that transform their hosts into killer zombies.

#10.DEAD ALIVE aka BRAIN DEAD (1992)

A young man's mother is bitten by a "rat- monkey." She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. Way before "Lord of the Rings", Peter "EAT LEAD SUCKA!!" Jackson Directed this blood fest thats so absurd it's awesome!

#9. C.H.U.D. (1984)

A rash of bizarre murders in New York City seems to point to a group of grotesquely deformed vagrants living in the sewers. A policeman, a photo journalist and his girlfriend, and a nutty bum, band together to try and determine what the creatures are and how to stop them.

#8. HOUSE (1986)

"Ding dong, you're dead." William Katt aka "The Greatest American Hero" moves into a new house and tries to work on a novel based on his experiences in the Vietnam War. Strange things start happening around him; little things at first, but as they become more frequent he becomes aware that the house resents his presence.

#7. FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)

Charlie Brewster (the Herman from Herman's Head) and his girl, Marcy from Married with Children think their neighbor is a vampire so of course the only one who can help him hunt them down is a washed-up actor, Peter Vincent, who hosts Charlie's favorite TV show, Fright Night.

#6. CREEP-SHOW (1982)

Inspired by the E.C. comics of the 1950s, George A.Romero and Stephen King bring five tales of terror to the screen. The first deals with a demented old man returning from the grave to get the Father's Day cake. The second is about a not-too-bright farmer discovering a meteor that turns everything into plant-life. The third is about a vengeful husband burying his wife and her lover up to their necks on the beach. The fourth is about a creature that resides in a crate under the steps of a college. The final story is about an ultra-rich businessman who gets his comeuppance from cockroaches.

#5. LIFE FORCE (1985)

A space shuttle mission investigating Halley's Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London's population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible

#4. SHOCKWAVES (1977)

This horror movie concerns a shipwrecked yachting party. Rose (Brooke Adams) and her fellow yacht-mates, including the captain (John Carradine) run aground on an island when they hit an odd-looking freighter. Once beached, they meet up with an aging SS Commander (Peter Cushing) who had been in charge of a crew of zombies.

#3. THE SERPRNT and the RAINBOW (1988)

"Don't bury me...I'm not dead!" An anthropologist (Bill Pulman) goes to Haiti after hearing rumors about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people in zombies.

#2. SHADOW of the VAMPPIRE (2000)

Max Schreck's performance in the classic film Nosferatu has become legendary. What if the reason he was so good is that he really was a vampire? That's the premise of this film, which features director F.W. Murnau so enamored with creating the perfect vampire film that he seeks out an actual member of the undead to play the title role. But when Schreck starts taking more and more advantage of the opportunities to feed he suddenly has, can Murnau come to his senses and destroy him?

#1. GLITTER (2001)

No film ever made has come close to giving the proper chills and deep dark haunting fear than this Mariah Carrey crapola crap-fest. Absolutely terrifying. My eyes my eyes they burn...

AKIRA: Live Action?

Heres another one of those projects I would love to see get made the right way! Just like the MADMAX story I posted last week it now seems that Katsuhiro Otomo's anime classic Akira
Is picking up steam. The studios are trying to get this baby rolling before the Writers guild strike. Thats garbage news already you do not rush a film like this to have in the can before the strike. Its gonna be helmed by director Ruairi Robinson (The Silent City)??? Never seen that film so I cant comment on this director but for such a well known cult film like this cant they get a better known name for it ? This is bitter sweet I'm glad this film is back in the works but man it sounds like they are screwing it up already. Oh well for those of you not versed in the art of AKIRA heres a synopsis via WIKIPIDEA.And heres a RE-CUT trailer of the anime AKIRA:

And this is the movie KANYE WEST copied in his Stronger video.

InkHeads INTERNET ARTICLE OF THE WEEK America’s Most Haunted Places' by:DIVAD

9 of America’s Most Haunted Places

If ghosts and goblins don’t give you enough chills this Halloween, plan a visit to one of these unusual and mysterious locations around the country—if you dare.
A spooky ship
The historic Queen Mary ocean liner, now permanently docked in Long Beach, Calif., has markers throughout that note places where guests have observed all kinds of spirit activities. But for a more interactive experience, try the Ghosts & Legends of the Queen Mary tour. In the long-empty first-class swimming pool, both guides and visitors regularly report seeing trails of wet footprints and catching glimpses of women dressed in vintage bathing suits. Through Oct. 31, the Queen Mary hosts Shipwreck, a “Halloween terrorfest” that features seven scary mazes and hundreds of snarling, groaning “monsters, mutants and maniacs.”

A haunted hotel
At San Diego’s historic Hotel del Coronado, there are countless tales of odd and recurring events, ranging from unexplained voices and late-night footsteps to strange scents and ghostly apparitions. Most have been attributed to the spirit of Kate Morgan, a young woman who checked in the night before Thanksgiving in 1892 and was found dead at the hotel five days later.

A terrifying prison
Bank robber Willie Sutton and gangster Al Capone are among the notorious criminals who have spent time in the giant wagon wheel-shaped Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. Abandoned as a prison in 1971, the 179-year-old building is now a historic landmark and a museum. Each October, the penitentiary’s 11 acres of crumbling cellblocks, eerie hallways and empty guard towers become the setting for the spine-tingling Terrors Behind the Walls attraction. More than 100 ghoulish, creepy zombies and other “inmates” are on hand to help visitors explore five haunted houses, each with a different theme. Lock Down, for example, has “electric” fences and rattling cell doors, while the 3-D Experiment is a place where a madman’s tinkering seems to be going terribly wrong.

Rooms full of spirits
In Portland, Ore., guests of the downtown Heathman Hotel who stay in rooms ending in “03” (703, 803, etc.) frequently call the front desk to report that they’ve seen a ghostly apparition at the end of the bed or that items have been mysteriously rearranged. A psychic who stayed overnight in an “03” room attributes these events to the ghost of a guest who may have leapt to death from a high floor and now returns to haunt the rooms that he or she passed on the way down.
For more information: http://www.heathmanhotel.com; 800-551-0011.

Mysteries in the forest
There don’t seem to be any ghosts at the Oregon Vortex attraction located deep in the woods in Gold Hill, Ore., but there are plenty of unexplained mysteries. A crooked wooden shack here is known as the House of Mystery. Inside, gravity is strangely askew: Balls appear to roll uphill, brooms stand upright without assistance, and people seem to get shorter or taller simply by changing places.

Crescent City chills
The French Quarter in New Orleans is “definitely the most haunted area of the most haunted city” in the U.S., says Sidney Smith, who operates year-round tours he describes as “mildly theatric, but hugely historical.” Visitors will see a variety of infamous spots, including haunted bars, spooky hotels and the site of the Lalaurie Mansion, said to be the most chilling spot in the city. “No one tries to scare you, but we go to sites connected with documented hauntings that have been investigated repeatedly by paranormal teams,” Smith says. He adds that although fainting is not unusual, he can’t promise that the tour of “vampiric-style crimes” sites is any tamer.

A creepy doll
In Key West, Fla., no ghost tour is complete without a stop at the Fort East Martello Museum and Garden, the home of Robert the Haunted Doll. In the early 1900s, this eerie-looking, straw-stuffed doll belonged to a boy named Robert “Gene” Otto, who blamed the doll for many acts of household mischief. Today, many unexplainable and mysterious events around Key West are still pinned on Robert, who many believe is a voodoo doll in a sailor suit. Some museum visitors swear they can see Robert’s smile change to a smirk, while others are sure they can hear him giggle and tap on the glass front of his display case.

Ghosts in the Windy City
The findings of author and paranormal researcher Ursula Bielski lend an extra air of authenticity to the unnerving stories told year-round on the three-hour Chicago Hauntings tours. The “ghost bus” visits more than a dozen haunted and “supernaturally active” spots throughout the city, including the Eastland passenger steamer disaster site, the death site of Resurrection Mary (the Vanishing Hitchhiker), the Biograph Theater (where bank robber John Dillinger was gunned down) and the site of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. “Whether you believe in ghosts is up to you,” says David Cowan, who runs the tour company with Bielski, his wife. “In spots where people died quickly, suddenly or unexpectedly, a sort of ‘residual phantasm’ remains. So a lot of people experience encounters.”
For more information: http://chicagohauntings.com; 888-GHOST-91.

Lone Star lights
Mystery surrounds the strange lights seen regularly in the night sky along a stretch of highway near Marfa, Texas, a small town located between El Paso and Midland. “They’re there almost every night,” says Joni Marginot of the Marfa Chamber of Commerce. “They look like small white lights on the horizon. Usually they’re white; sometimes they’re greenish and sometimes they’re red. They move about and might travel east to west. Some nights they might split and divide and merge back together, or turn off entirely.”
Scientists have studied the Marfa Lights, but no one has been able to figure out exactly where they come from. Some claim the lights are the wandering spirit of an Apache chief on the nearby mountains. Others say the lights are a mirage, signals from aliens or nothing more than the headlights of cars on the highway. Still, folks gather regularly to watch for the lights from an official viewing area nine miles east of town. And while there’s a Marfa Lights Festival each Labor Day, Marginot says the town doesn’t organize anything special for Halloween, because “the lights are already too spooky for that.”

DiVad's 80's MOVIE FLASHBACK MINI-REVIEW

Hey folks DiVad back again, this time with my first posting of "80's MOVIE FLASHBACK MINI- REVIEW" I have, like many others this addicting service called Netflix and recently I've been on 80's movie mode. (I guess it's the new Indy and the new Rambo, Transformers, G.I. Joe and God knows what other 80's franchise they are desperately trying to reinvent) Anyway, when old movies pop into my head that I used to love when i was a kid, I wonder, would this movie still hold up now? Maybe not the special effects but will it still be a good movie to watch now that I'm 27 yrs. old and did the whole "film school" thing? Well I've been renting a whole bunch of them online, big budget classics and those good ol' HBO/straight to video ones. Which one will I flashback too today? None other than what has to be George "bluescreen" Lucas' worst film his named ever appeared in......

"HOWARD THE DUCK" (1986)

Released in 1986, Universal Pictures big budget "epic" film is basically about a midget in a duck suit (but is really a talking sophisticated duck even though it looks like a midget in a duck suit) That gets beamed to Earth in some freak scientific experiment and has to get back home. Oh yea in the meantime: battle some evil alien stop-motion monsters, flee from stupid 80's cops in a bicycle plane with "Andy" (Tim Robbins), fall in love with "Marty McFly's" mom (Lea Thompson) and of course play kick-ass guitar while saving the world first.

The movie flopped... big time and is still today considered one of the classic bombs in recent memory. Now technically the movie is not that badly done for 1986. (Aside from that whole: "midget in a duck suit thing") It had 'big dog' ILM doing the stop- motion and matte paintings and a shit load of old school optical electricity and laser beam effects. Now used to love this movie when I was six or seven and my dad would always groan and make this disgusting face every time I told him to play the movie. I never understood why? Who didn't love Howard the Duck? Well I understand now my father's pain. I love me a good ol' fantasy flick but can you imagine being an adult when this movie came out and having to sit there and watch this with your kid? Bottom line: Not even Tim Robbins and the weirdo child molester principle from 'Ferris Buller's Day Off' can save this stinker of 80's cheese and I mean that in a bad way. (But It's still a movie to watch piss drunk and laugh) note: This movie is not on DVD yet I actually found someone who has a VHS copy so Netflix can't help here.

Don't belive me check out some clips below:

INTRO SCENE: (why?)

BAR FIGHT: (looks too good to be a "midget in a duck suit")

DINER ACTION!!! (check out the classic 80's Starwars old school optical electricity fx)

Alecc B. on "Dan In Real Life"

Do you guys watch The Office? If not, you need to. The entire cast is great, but Steve Carell stands out as the incompetent man in charge, Michael. There are so many awkward and uncomfortable situations that seem like they wouldn't be as bad if Michael just shut his mouth from time to time. Carell plays that role to perfection.

As far as films go, Carell's best performances are in and The 40-Year Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. He tried his hand at a big-budget family film with Evan Almighty, which was one of the biggest flops this year. I can't even think of one part in any of the trailers that looked funny.

Now, Carell gives us Dan In Real Life. I guess the best way to describe this movie is to call it a bland version of The Family Stone.

PLOT

Dan Burns is a newspaper columnist who people write to for advice. He's a widower with three children that just tries to set a good example. All four of them go on vacation to spend time with the rest of their family. While in town, Dan meets Marie, an out-of-towner, and instantly has a connection with her. After they part ways, Dan goes back to his family's house to tell everyone about it. That's when his younger brother Mitch introduces him to his new girlfriend. Yep, Mitch is dating Marie. OH SNAP!

ACTING

Carell is good as Dan. He balances the comedic and dramatic elements well. Juliette Binoche plays Marie light and breezy. She seemed to have a good time making this flick. Dane Cook, as Mitch, is absolutely terrible here. There are scenes in this flick where Cook will say his lines and you'll actually cringe. Sure, the dialogue wasn't anything special, but Cook isn't gifted enough to make them work anyway. There is one scene in particular when Cook sings in front of the family. Oh...my...word. Just awful. As Dan's parents, Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney are underused. The sexy Emily Blunt shows up for a couple of scenes and looks oh-so-scrumptious!

WRITING & DIRECTING

Peter Hedges and Pierce Gardner wrote the script for this flick. Movies with a simple premise like Dan In Real Life are elevated to a good place when the writing is strong. That's not what happened here. The dialogue is pretty stale throughout the film, and the characters of the family aren't really that developed, so it never feels like you're watching a real family. They're just familiar faces all together in one flick.

The character of Marie never really gained any sympathy from me either. I mean, she's constantly flirting with Dan even after she knows he is Mitch's brother. What a whore!

Hedges directs here too, and doesn't really add anything to Life besides stale direction and slow pacing. There are only two scenes in the movie that actually put a smile on my face. One involves Cook singing before the God-awful performance I mentioned earlier. The other scene has Carell dancing like a fool at a local bar. Those two scenes were very funny and left something to be desired for the rest of the film. That desire was never fulfilled.

While not being completely terrible, Dan In Real Life is still pretty weak.

Overall Review: ** stars

Best Line:

Carell: This corn is like an angel.

MADMAX - (FURY ROAD)

It looks like a new MADMAX movie is picking up steam once again. A report out of MOVIEHOLE says movie effects houses are being scoped out for "MAD MAX: FURY ROAD"... Baddass right! Moviehole says Mel Gibson will not be back this time around I know that sucks because he is Mad fucking Max. But a MADMAX movie with todays effects and stunts makes me fucking druel. George Miller the director of MADMAX is attached to JUSTICE LEAGUE aswell. And please don't handcough him with restrictions and small tight budgets like they did George A. Romero with LAND of the DEAD please!

Alecc B. on "30 Days Of Night"

Vampire movies are tough to make these days. Lately, they're either campy fun like From Dusk Till Dawn or action flicks like the Blade and Underworld series, but they're rarely scary. The truth of the matter is, there's not too much else you can do in a vampire movie that's original anymore...except set the movie in Alaska of course. This is the setting for 30 Days Of Night!

PLOT

The last day of sunlight is coming to an end in a small town in Alaska, and nightfall will be all anyone sees for 30 days. You know what else they'll see? Mutha fuckin' vampires!

ACTING

Josh Hartnett takes the hero-role as the town sheriff, Eben. Surprisingly, Hartnett didn't bore me to tears this time around like he usually does and handles most of the ass-kicking. Melissa George plays his wife Stella. STELLA!!!!!!!! I had to. Anyway, Eben and Stella are having problems and the two lead actors do their best to show us that. They succeed for the most part. There are an assorted group of people trying to survive, but I'll just talk about a couple of the stand-outs. Mark Rendall plays Eben's brother Jake. He's scared for most of the movie but never annoying. As the town loner Beau, Mark Boone Jr. looks as scruffy as always, but he kicks mucho ass here. Danny Huston plays the head vampire Marlow. He doesn't do much but look creepy, and does a pretty good job. When he does speak though, it's some other language like French...or Chinese. Just kidding, it's sounded Russian to me. I could be wrong though. Ben Foster plays The Stranger, a man who comes into town and starts to cause trouble before the vamps show up. Foster has done nothing but play crazy people this whole year. Can you say...typecast?

WRITING & DIRECTING

30 Days Of Night was adapted into a film by the original author of the graphic novel, Steve Niles. He got some help from Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson. The story works very well. Imagine living in a place with no sunlight for a month. Then imagine that place is being populated by hungry vamps. Not cool. The setting of Alaska puts a lot of exciting scenes in place that wouldn't work if the film took place anywhere else. I do think that the story moved a little fast at times, making it seem like it wasn't complete hell during these 30 days. I could of dealt without a bit of dialogue that came from a little girl in the second half of the film as well.

Director David Slade gave Night a very cool look. It's dark and gray, but still vivid. I kind of got the vibe I felt while watching John Carpenter's The Thing. The editing is tight and there are quite a few scares. Slade also did not hold back on the gore. There is plenty-o-blood shed throughout this film, and a couple of very graphic scenes involving decapitations. I know what you're thinking...COOL!

The ending for this flick was ripped right out of one of the Blade movies. I won't say which one in fear of ruining it for you guys. Then again, I never read the novel, so the ending might be faithful and Blade could have been the one who stole the idea. I'm thinking way too much about this.

If you're looking for an entertaining horror flick for a late Friday or Saturday night, 30 Days Of Night should deliver the goods for you.

Overall Review: **1/2 stars

Best Line:

Hartnett: Come on mother fuckers!

Alecc B. on "Gone Baby Gone"

In all honesty, I can say that I feel bad for Ben Affleck. After the debacle that was his relationship with Jennifer Lopez, Affleck's acting career has taken a nose-dive due to all the bad publicity he got. With the exception of the critical praise and Golden Globe nomination he received for Hollywoodland, The Fleck hasn't made a movie that people saw since Daredevil that was a hit, and that movie was pretty terrible as well.

So The Fleck has taken a break from acting and is making his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, which is also the first script he's written since winning an Academy Award for Good Will Hunting. Come to think of it, if I was Ben, and someone said I sucked, I'd carry that Oscar around and just be like, "You see this shit? That's right!" I'm sure Cuba Gooding Jr. has been doing that for the past ten years, and will probably continue to do so for the rest of his life.

With Gone Baby Gone, The Fleck has tried one last time to leave a mark in Hollywood. Does he succeed? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck ya-self. Sorry, The Departed popped into my head. What I meant to say was, yes!

PLOT

A little girl goes missing in Boston. Two private investigators, Patrick and Angie, who are also romantically involved, are hired by the family of the missing girl to help the police with the search. There are people that won't talk to cops, and that's where Patrick and Angie come in. What starts out as a straight forwrad case turns into a situation with plenty of twists and hardcore Bahh-ston accents!

ACTING

Casey Affleck shines as Patrick. He's very comfortable in the lead role and even though he's a tiny guy, I totally bought him as someone who could defend himself. Michelle Monaghan plays Angie, a character that is worried how this case will affect her, no matter how it turns out. Monaghan is getting her face out there more often now, and besides the fact that she's super cute, she can really act. Her performance here is very good. Ed Harris plays one of the detectives working on the case, Remy Bressant. I don't know about you, but I look forward to seeing Harris get angry. He just looks and acts like one seriously mean mutha fucka and he carries that attitude into this film as well as he does in about every other movie. His partner, Nick Poole, is played by John Ashton. I don't think I've seen this guy since Beverly Hills Cop 2. He looks a little older and slimmer, but you can recognize him as soon as you see him. Very cool to see him on the big-screen again. Someone who looks very different now is Amy Madigan, who seems to have put on a ton of weight since Field Of Dreams. She plays the missing little girls' aunt, Beatrice. There is a whole lot-o-sadness in Beatrice, and Madigan makes that obvious even when she's not saying anything. As Beatrice's husband and brother to the mother of the girl, Lionel is played by Titus Welliver. He's pretty good but his mustache is distracting. Amy Ryan is great as Helene, the little girl's mother. There are times that you'll hate her for being a terrible mother, and other times you'll simply pity her. Morgan Freeman shows up as Jack Doyle, the man who is running the investigation. I don't think I need to say anything about his performance. We all know Freeman is the man. The Fleck wisely decided not to put himself in this film.

WRITING & DIRECTING

The Fleck had some help from Aaron Stockard in adapting Dennis Lehane's novel for Gone Baby Gone into a film. The story has a nice flow to it. The Fleck has a good ear for dialogue, as proven before with Hunting. I guess the only problem I had with the story was when it was revealed who was behind the whole kidnapping of the girl. It felt like I was watching an episode of Law & Order. In other words, it was a little much for me. There's also a scene in a bar near the end that's a bit silly.

As a director, The Fleck definitely has some skill. He's subtle in his approach to shooting scenes, but it works for this film. Gone has a dreary look to it, much like the film adaptation for one of Lehane's other novels, Mystic River. Also, while trying to prove himself with this film, Ben Affleck has also transformed his younger brother Casey into a leading man.

Hopefully, Gone Baby Gone isn't gone from the theatres before you get a chance to check it out.

Alecc B. on "We Own The Night"

About a year ago, The Departed came out and
revitalized the tough guy movie. Leonardo DiCaprio finally looked like a man and not like a scrawny little sissy anymore, which helped when it came to
holding his own against the other big dogs on screen. But, with a great success like Departed, imitators are sure to follow.

This week, we have We Own The Night. The trailers try to push that it has that Departed feel to it, but the film falls kind of short of those expectations.

PLOT

Bobby Green is a popular guy. He manages a night club in 1988 New York that just happens to be owned by the Russians that his father and brother, who happen to be police officers, are investigating. Now, Bobby is left with the choice of helping his family or betraying them!!! Oh snap!!!

ACTING

Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic as Bobby. In Night, Phoenix accomplishes the same feat he does with every film, and that is totally lose himself in the character. Whenever he is on-screen, no one else matters. As Bobby's brother Joseph, Mark Wahlberg basically recycles his performance from The Departed, only it's not as good. Robert Duvall mostly coasts through this film as their father Burt, but it's The Duvall, he can get away with it. Eva Mendes plays Bobby's girl Amada. She's good when she doesn't have to show too much emotion. Her scenes that involve her being drunk or high are probably the most believable. Even though her performance wasn't mind-blowing, I still (heart) her. She's quite pleasant to look at. Alex Veadov plays what is essentially the main baddie who wages war on the cops, Vadim. He plays the role very calm and to good effect.

WRITING & DIRECTING

James Gray handled both screenwriting and directing duties here. Let's talk about his script. The story is pretty simple and not all that original. What makes We Own the Night work is the dialogue, which is pretty solid and gives the cast a lot of meat to chew on.

The film is visually pleasing. I mean, who can complain when a movie starts with Eva Mendes all coked up on a couch and letting a nipple slip? No one, that's right. The scenes of violence are well shot and edited, having no problem building up suspense. The standout action sequence is a car chase that takes place under heavy rain. I tip my hat to Mr. Gray for that one.

I will say that the climax is very underwhelming, considering all that took place before it. That was a bit of a disappointment, along with the so-so acting I mentioned above.

The final scene of the film is very touching though. It involves two characters exchanging two easy bits of dialogue, but that scene is the one I remember best, besides Mendes' nipple slip of course.

Overall Review: ** 1/2 stars

Best Line:

Duvall: If you piss in your pants, you can only stay warm for so long.
