Bad Movie Of The Week: Wanted

Everyone that knows me well can tell you that I’ll watch just about anything on DVD, even movies that look terrible. So I decided to start a Bad Movie Night, in which I would sit down with whoever wants to join me and watch a movie that is sure to suck. This week’s shit-fest is…Wanted!

PLOT

Wesley Gibson is a loser who has nothing exciting going on in his life. One night, he meets Fox, a woman who knew his now deceased father, who just happened to be THE GREATEST ASSASSIN WHO EVER LIVED! Now, Wesley finds himself caught up in a battle of curved bullets as he discovers that he’s THE CHOSEN ONE…or some bullshit like that.

ACTING

If there was ever a time I wanted to reach into the screen and choke someone, it was while watching James McAvoy act as Gibson. Man-o-man was he annoying. Angelina Jolie shows up with the whole crackhead physique that she does so well. Come on people, this chick is not that hot. She’s a good actress, but you won’t be getting any of those goods in this flick. The biggest disappointment comes with Morgan Freeman. It’s disappointing in the sense that I can’t believe he came out in this film. I never pegged him for a paycheck actor but that has to be the only reason for his presence here. He does have the best line in the film though, bringing Wanted up to it’s rating below. The rest of the cast isn’t even worth addressing.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, and Chris Morgan were put in charge of adapting Mark Millar and J.G. Jones’ comic book for the big screen. The story has a been there, done that quality to it with the whole curving bullets nonsense thrown in. Comic book films are usually not very believable, but that doesn’t mean they need to be dumb either.

Timur Bekmambetov brings the same over the top visual style to Wanted as he did with his Nightwatch/Daywatch films. I enjoyed the …watch films, more for the story than anything. He did go overboard with the action sequences in those films as well, and that’s where he usually loses my interest. Not every comic book film can be like The Dark Knight, but dreck like this is just unacceptable.

I can handle an action film that exaggerates everything. I really can. But once the film starts taking itself too serious, as Wanted does, then that’s when I wish I had fruit to throw at the screen.

If you needed one picture to describe how silly Wanted is, the one above is a winner. That’s what happens when you run down a hallway of a building and jump face first through a window to fly out, shoot people on the roof of the building across the street and go through another window of that building. At least that’s what happens in the world of Wanted. So stupid.

Overall Review: ½ a star

Worst Line:

McAvoy: You're not an assassin of fate, Sloan. You're just a thug that can bend bullets.

Best Line:

Freeman: Shoot that mutha fucka!
