Alecc B. on "This Christmas"

When I first saw the trailer for This Christmas, I said to myself, "FUCK!" The reason behind me using such foul language was that I felt this film seemed very similar to a script my friend Darryll and I wrote. This made me upset, angry even. Hell, I was tornado of anger, swirling about. Then I saw Christmas.

After viewing this family film, I'm happy to say that there is only one thing in our script that needs to be changed, with the similarities ending there. Phew!

PLOT

The Whitfields always get together for Christmas. Everyone gathers at Ma Dear's house to be a family for at least once a year. But we all know that this Christmas will be different. Loaded with surprises, singing, dancing, and more dancing, this is one holiday film you don't wanna miss!! Did I sell you on it with that? THOUGHT SO!

ACTING

Chris Brown tries prove to us that he can act as well as sing and dance his ass off as Baby. For the most part, he is charming and definitely a better actor than Usher, but he does struggle with a couple of the more dramatic scenes. Loretta Devine plays Mama Whitfiled, otherwise referred to as Ma Dear. I never liked Devine. I feel that every movie she's in, she tries too hard and fails each time. As Ma Dear's man Joe, Delroy Lindo is as cool as he always is. Idris Elba plays the oldest brother Quentin. I've been seeing Elba more often these days, and I must say he's got the same cool factor as Lindo in this flick. Columbus Short plays Claude, another sibling who's also a marine. Short has a natural charisma that works well with the rest of the cast. Regina King plays one of the sisters, Lisa. King is always great to watch, but even more-so here. I have no idea when she developed her fantastic body, but she shows it off a couple of times here and I am grateful for it. As Lisa's husband Malcome, Laz Alonso has some fun playing a guy that still thinks the world is a place where your woman will do everything for you, including cutting your dinner meat. Sharon Leal plays another sister, Kelli, the sassy independent woman of today. Leal is sexy as all hell and has a few funny moments too. Mekhi Phifer plays Kelli's holiday crush, Gerald. They have a nice chemistry together. Lauren London plays the youngest sister Melanie. This girl is just too cute for words, and she can act, which helps. Keith Robinson plays her boyfriend Devean and has a couple of good moments to shine. All in all, the whole family feels like a real family, with the exception of the weak Devine. Special shout-out goes to a superstar on the rise, Tiana Soleil. She has performance near the end of the film with Brown and handled her business! BOOM!

WRITING & DIRECTING

The man behind the script and camera for This Christmas is Preston A. Whitmore II. The script is good for the most part. There are a ton of clichés that I could've done without though. Like the family member who is in trouble and gets bailed out at the right time. Or the family member with a big secret who thinks that the secret is best kept hidden but soon realizes otherwise. There are a few others, but you get the picture. The cast is really what saves the script.

As a director, Whitmore has some skill. Christmas is a good-looking film. The pacing is well done and the movie doesn't put you to sleep. The final scene is cute little rehash of an earlier one, only this time it needed some definite trimming.

This Christmas is a good family film. It's not great and doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but if you're looking for a lighthearted time at the movies, you should check it out.

Phifer: I know you were pretty naughty last night, but Santa can't say it wasn't nice.

Alecc B. on "The Mist"

For those of you who don't know, The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie of all time. Since that film is pretty much perfect, I will give any other film directed by Frank Darabont a chance. Okay, so I never saw The Majestic, but I did catch The Green Mile, which like Redemption, was an adaptation of a Stephen King story, and that was one of the breeziest three hour films I have ever seen.

Darabont has now returned to theatres with The Mist, which was also a work of King. Fear not, this ain't The Fog. However, while being very twisted at times, this flick does manage to drop the ball on more than one occasion.

PLOT

David Drayton makes movie posters for a living. One night, a freakish storm sends a monstrous tree right through his house, destroying the room where he keeps his work. Not only that, the neighbor's tree crashed down on David's boathouse, smashing it to nothing.

So the next day David, his son, and the neighbor all take a ride to the local supermarket to pick up supplies. While there, a mysterious mist begins to engulf the whole town, trapping everyone inside. Fear and paranoia begin to set in, leaving David no choice but to rip off his shirt and yell, "I AM BEOWULF!" Oops, wrong movie.

ACTING

Thomas Jane actually did a good job here as David and didn't make me laugh unintentionally. There are a couple of moments where he gets emotional that reminded me of Mel Gibson. What I mean is that sometimes, when Gibson has to emote, it might feel a little forced but it still works for the scene. Jane manages to pull that off here and is convincing in the more heroic moments as well. As David's son Billy, Nathan Gamble is pretty impressive. We all know kid actors can be annoying in horror flicks, but not this time. Andre Braugher plays David's neighbor, Brent, a hot-shot lawyer from the city. Braugher is always great in any role he takes and delivers once again in this flick. Alexa Davalos plays Sally, a clerk at the supermarket. She's decent in this role. As Sally's love interest Wayne, Sam Witwer plays this troubled military soldier well, although his eyebrows are distracting at times. Marcia Gay Harden takes the role of Mrs. Carmody, the religious nut who believes God is behind all that is happening. She will get on your nerves, but that's not because Harden's performance is flawed, but because the character will really get under your skin and make you want to choke the shit out of her. Laurie Holden plays Amanda, someone who becomes part of David's inner circle and becomes sort of a mother figure for Billy. Holden jumps back and forth with being strong and then afraid with ease. Toby Jones plays Ollie, a supervisor at the market who also becomes David's right-hand man. Jones gives a good performance here and you definitely root for him. Special shout-out goes to Darabont-regular William Sadler hamming it up as Jim, one of the local rednecks.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Frank Darabont played both writer and director for The Mist, and he's hit and miss for both. As far as the script goes, you won't be bored. However, there are times when the dialogue is just not working. I even found myself yelling out lines that would have been more amusing to use, well at least to me anyway. The revelation behind the mist was a bit hokey for me too. There are some tense moments though.

Darabont switched his directing style up a bit with this one, opting for a lot of handheld camera-work that was very effective in building the tension. Considering the fact that this movie was shot on a low-budget (reported: $17 million), I should let some of the weak special effects slide this time around, but there are a few scenes that have just unacceptable CGI for a film coming out in 2007. I would have rather they just not show what the characters are looking at and just get facial expressions from the actors like the movies of old. No lie, some of the special effects are laughable.

Now, there are a few things that save this film from being a disaster. Jane in the lead is one reason to check it out. Another reason is that there are some truly suspenseful sequences, the most uncomfortable one being when some of the folks inside the supermarket put the blame for everything that's taking place on a certain someone. Let's just say things get ugly.

The final reason for seeing The Mist is the ending. You're either going to love or hate the conclusion, but you won't be able to deny how brave it is.

Overall Review: **1/2 stars

Best Line:

Jane: Of course, he's a kid. He's supposed to be stupid. What's your excuse?

DiVad's: CASTLEVANIA MOVIE UPDATE

Update: Castlevania Plot Details!
Source: ShockTillYouDrop.com
November 26, 2007

Update: Bloody-Disgusting's insider tells them the below synopsis, gleaned from an official production listing sent our way by our own sources, is outdated. While this synopsis was indeed used at one time, it no longer reflects the current draft of the script.

The first plot details for Rogue Pictures' Castlevania, based on the Konami video game, have floated our way.

Sylvain White (Stomp the Yard) is directing the horror-actioner; he's working from a script by Paul W.S. Anderson and Ian Jeffers. Sources tell us shooting will begin sometime in February.

Beware, there may be SPOILERS ahead. Read on and try not to get all nostalgic for Van Helsing.

It is the year 1691... The land of Transylvania has been at peace for 100 years now, and the peasants and villagers have begun to purge their minds of the memories of the times when the lands were dominated by chaos and shadows, and when the undead walked the earth.

However, there are those that remember that the evil Count Dracula returns every 100 years to plague the land, bringing with him the forces of Hell. Thus, one evening, the Prince of Darkness rises and returns to Castlevania, his ancestral home, calling forth his minions to purge the world of human flesh. The people cry out for a hero - someone to defend them from the evil desires of the count. Thankfully, they don't have to look very far, for within the land of Transylvania the Belmont line still lives, as Simon Belmont, great-grandson of Christopher Belmont, takes up the legendary whip called the Vampire Killer, and sets forth on his journey through the darkened countryside to the dark lord's castle.

Upon arrival, the young man fights his way through legions of zombies, gigantic bats, and even faces Death himself, but in the end, he makes it to the Count and in a battle to end all battles, he comes out the victor. The price? The evil master places a curse of death upon Simon, which will lead him into a long and dangerous journey in the very near future.

BoxOffice Weekend Nov 16- 19

Animated 3-D 'Beowulf' slays box office

The Associated Press

The animated telling of "Beowulf," who rids a Danish kingdom of the feared beast Grendel, slew the box office over the weekend, giving a huge boost to 3-D films in the process.

The Paramount Pictures release earned $28.1 million in its opening weekend — 40 percent of which came from special 3-D showings in regular theaters and on Imax screens.

Top 10 weekend draws at the box office:

1. "Beowulf," $28.1 million.
2. "Bee Movie," $14.3 million.
3. "American Gangster," $13.2 million.
4. "Fred Claus," $12 million.
5. "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," $10 million.
6. "Dan in Real Life," $4.5 million.
7. "No Country for Old Men," $3 million.
8. "Lions for Lambs," $3 million.
9. "Saw IV," $2.3 million.
10. "Love in the Time of Cholera," $1.9 million.

Previous week:

1. "Bee Movie," $26 million.
2. "American Gangster," $24.3 million.
3. "Fred Claus," $19.2 million.
4. "Lions for Lambs," $6.7 million.
5. "Dan in Real Life," $5.9 million.
6. "Saw IV," $5 million.
7. "The Game Plan," $2.4 million.
8. "P2," $2.2 million.
9. "30 Days of Night," $2.1 million.
10. "Martian Child," $1.7 million.

The film took in $8 million in ticket sales on 638 screens equipped with technology from RealD, which uses a special reflective screen and polarized lens glasses that moviegoers can take as a souvenir.

Theater owners were able to charge about $2 extra for the 3-D showing.

The film also sold $3.6 million worth of tickets on 84 Imax screens showing the film using their own 3-D technology.

"Twenty percent of the screens produced 40 percent of the gross," Paramount general sales manager Don Harris said Sunday.

The film, from director Robert Zemeckis, used performance-capture technology to render lifelike images of its stars Ray Winstone and Angelina Jolie.

"If this isn't a mandate on the popularity and viability of 3-D, I don't know what is," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Studios are planning even more animated and live actions films in 3-D as they try to lure audiences back into multiplexes.

This week's top 12 films grossed 29 percent less than the top 12 in the same weekend last year. Ticket sales were also off 3 percent from last week.

Attendance has been down eight of the past nine weekends according to Media By Numbers.

But studio officials said they expected a slate of family films to gain steam during the extended Thanksgiving holiday and into December.

The animated family film "Bee Movie," written by Jerry Seinfeld, had the second-highest gross of the weekend with $14.3 million in ticket sales, bringing its total after three weeks to $98.8 million.

The release by DreamWorks Animation has been hovering in the top two spots at the box office since it opened.

The fantasy tale "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," from 20th Century Fox, opened in fifth place with $10 million. The movie stars Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman in a story of an eccentric who owns a toy store with a life of its own.

The other film opening over the weekend, "Love in the Time of Cholera," from New Line, debuted in 10th place with $1.9 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Exhibitor Relations Co. Inc., are:

DiVad's: New Trailer Of the Day

Here's the Bootleg version trailer for "Cloverfield"/1-18-08/untitled JJ Abrams movie. Bad quality but it still looks cool enough.

TRAILER 2 bootleg

Alecc B. on "Beowulf"

Computer animation has come very far. I remember being wowed when I first saw Toy Story back in 1995. It's still a great looking film, but technology has advanced since then and the big thing now is motion-capture.

Motion-capture is what brought certain characters into our lives, like Gollum, the last take on King Kong, and an all-too-real cartoon version of Tom Hanks. But now, in 2007, we are given a true look into the possible future of filmmaking as a whole, not just for animated films.

Beowulf is quite the vision, but are we drawn in by the story as well as the amazing animation? Sadly, no.

PLOT

Back in Something A.D., a king is partying with his people. They are all getting drunk and doing the Soulja Boy. Okay, not really. Either way, far off in the distance is Grendel, a hideous monster with the most sensitive of ears. Knowing the right way to kill a party, Grendel basically kills everyone there, leaving only a few alive to seek help.

Help arrives in the form of Beowulf, a warrior who comes to town with one thing on his mind, and that's "I'ma kill me a mutha fuckin' monster...and then I'm gonna get drunk and bang village whores." But things don't work out quite the way he planned, and not only does he have to deal with Grendel, but the monster's mama too!

ACTING

Here are the talented actors and actresses that voiced the characters of Beowulf:

Beowulf - Ray Winstone
Hrothgar - Anthony Hopkins
Unferth - John Malkovich
Wealthow - Robin Wright Penn
Wiglaf - Brendan Gleeson
Grendel - Crispin Glover
Ursula - Alison Lohman
Grendel's Mama - Angelina Jolie

WRITING & DIRECTING

Beowulf was adapted from a very old poem, who's writer remains anonymous, into the film being released now. Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary were the writers on staff here, and it was very obvious that this film relied solely on the animation and not the storytelling. Beowulf chugs along at an extremely slow pace and there just isn't enough excitement to make up for the dead spots.

For the first time ever, I'm disappointed in a Robert Zemeckis film. This is the man behind Forrest Gump, the Back To The Future series, Contact, and a ton of other great films. Beowulf isn't the first time Zemeckis played with motion-capture, The Polar Express was. Zemeckis was criticized over how creepy the kids looked in Express, and he definitely fixed that problem this time around, by basically making the characters look about 90% like the actors who voice them except for Winstone, who's quite heavier than Beowulf. I'm sure Winstone liked to be portrayed as a cock-diesel hero who takes any opportunity to rip off his shirt. Seriously, Beowulf rips his shirt off every chance he gets. The standout animation belongs to Jolie's character. At times, it just looks like she's really on-screen.

The final product of Beowulf is an unbelievable triumph in animation and very beautiful to look at, but there is no heart in the storytelling, and a pretty film can only get you so far. If this is a glimpse into the future of making movies, I'm not that excited.

Beowulf...more like Bore-wulf.

Overall Review: *1/2 stars

Best Line:

Winstone: I...AM...BEOWULF!

DiVad's New Horror Movie Rumor of the Week

Update: Zombie Down with the C.H.U.D.?!
Source: Dread Central
November 9, 2007

Update: It's a he said/she said schtick and until something's legit, we're off the story. We got word from Zombie's management team that he is NOT directing the remake.

Dread Central received word from Rob Zombie that he will be in the director's chair on an update of the 1984 eco-horror film C.H.U.D.! There's not much to their story other than a confirmation of his involvement, nor is there any indication that this is what he's doing next.

In the original, several strangers come together to face a "cannibalistic humanoid underground dweller" menace lurking beneath the streets of New York City.

It is an odd decision on Zombie's part given the fact that Halloween made bucks and he could pretty much rock with any project he wanted. Alas, this is a fickle business. I gotta admit, I can't say I'm not excited to see the words "Rob Zombie's C.H.U.D." grace the screen in the future. That's a palatable brew right there.

Alecc B. Presents "The Top Five 80's Comedy-Films Made After the 80's!"

If you're looking at the subject heading and asking yourself, "What the hell is he talking about?", allow me to explain. 80's comedies have a certain feel to them. They always manage to put a smile on your face. From Ferris Bueller's Day Off to Bachelor Party to Fast Times at Ridgmont High, they are films that will remain being classics forever. There are films that have tried to duplicate that feel. Many have failed. Others have come close. Five have been chosen as the best! Here is the list(which is an absolute good), starting from five and working it's way to the best 80's comedy-film made after the 80's! We begin with:

5.) The Girl Next Door - This movie was such a surprise to me. I thought it was going to be another good premise wasted in a bad movie. I was wrong. The plot revolves a girl that moves next door to a high school kid and they end up becoming an item. One of the guy's buddies reveals a dirty little secret about his woman and his life begins to spiral out of control. Elisha Cuthbert plays the titular girl and is unbelievably hot! Timothy Olyphant shows up and steals every scene he's in. When you take the pressures of high school, a really hot chick, the porn industry, a great soundtrack and mix them all together, it makes for one very entertaining movie, which The Girl Next Door is.

Best Line: It's like a gift. It's like I can't control it.

4.) Road Trip - Sure, American Pie was funny, but this movie was hilarious! Long-distance relationships are tough, and this flick shows one of the worst things that can happen. The story revolves around a boyfriend and girlfriend who go to different colleges. The boyfriend has a fling with a girl on campus and videotapes it. Next thing he knows, that tape is accidently mailed to his girlfriend. He rounds up some of his buddies and they take a road trip to try and intercept the tape before his girlfriend watches it. Plenty of problems arise during this trip, and every situation is funnier than the last.

Best Line: Would you like a fresh towel? Maybe you can roll that up and smoke it.

3.) Old School - Welcome back Vince Vaughn! That's what I said after seeing this flick for the first time. After a a string of serious movies like Return to Paradise and really bad ones like Domestic Disturbance, Vaughn returned to comedic form in this ode to the classic college comedy genre. Men of all ages pledging to fraternities, naked chicks, and lots of vulgar language is enough material to create a comedy that will be remembered for many years to come. Old School has all of these components, and Will Ferrell!

Best Line: You're my boy Blue!

2.) Can't Hardly Wait - This is the only movie on this list that is not rated R. Even at PG-13, this flick had me in stitches. High school is over and it's time for everyone to grow up, but not before one last party. Many of the people going to this party have certain things that need to be accomplished. Whether the subplots include getting even with the school bully, having sex, or telling the most popular girl in school that you're in love with her, Can't Hardly Wait delivers on all fronts. The way the characters are introduced is also very creative.

Best Line: Someone in there called me a...fag!

1.) Wedding Crashers - I remember when I first saw this trailer. It was in a packed movie theater and everyone in there was laughing. I started to think that the movie itself wasn't going to be able to live up to the reaction the trailer received. Well, it lived up to it and then some! The pairing of Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson in this R-rated comedy about two guys that crash weddings to sleep with chicks was genius. You have Wilson's laid back delivery matched up against Vaughn's rat-a-tat-tat style and what came out of it was comedy gold! Plus, you have Christopher Walken, who makes me laugh just by the way he talks, and the beautiful Rachel McAdams as the love interest.

Best Line: Jabroni!

So that's the list. What do you think?

DiVad back again with another Top 5. This time it's 'Drama'Movie Trailers. There is a variety of dramas in this countdown :Thriller, Historical , Crime and even a movie that has plenty of comedy mixed with the overall drama.

It's hard to put the best trailers on a top 5 list so I had to split them into film genres. Forget if the movie sucked or not, were talking trailers only here. We've all fallen for the marketing tricks.(The awesome trailer that ends up being a good ol' piece of Hollywood crap and the awful trailer that ends up becoming the year's best movie.) DiVad's "Coming Soon" Movie Updates

Hasbro Comments on G.I. Joe Movie

Hasbro has released to following message to fans regarding Paramount Pictures' live-action G.I. Joe adaptation, to be directed by Stephen Sommers and written by Stuart Beattie:

"Hasbro's G.I. Joe Team wanted to take this opportunity to clarify some of the facts regarding the G.I. Joe live-action movie that we are developing with Paramount Pictures.

First and foremost, we are not changing what the G.I. Joe brand is about. The name "G.I. Joe" will always be synonymous with bravery and heroism.

The G.I. Joe brand has enjoyed a successful 43-year history, spanning two key generations. The first was the line of 12-inch "realistic military" figures that were popular with kids in the 1960s and 1970s.

The second generation, was created in 1982, and is based on a cast of fictional heroes and villains that make up the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" fantasy. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their "fight for freedom wherever there is trouble" against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series.

This movie will be a modern telling of the "G.I. Joe vs. Cobra" storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the "Pit" as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I. Joe is a very important property to Hasbro and we thank all of our fans for their enthusiasm. Without all of you, the brand would not be where it is today."

G.I. Joe is expected to hit theaters in 2009.

Sylvester Stallone (Rambo, Rocky Balboa) is in talks to direct and star in MGM's remake of the 1974 Charles Bronson movie Death Wish.

Stallone will play an ordinary man who goes vigilante after his wife and daughter are attacked. Set to write the script are Michael Ferris and John Brancato, whose credits include Terminator 3: Rise of the Machiens and Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins.

Paramount Pictures controls some Death Wish rights and has an option to partner. Variety says MGM will make the film whether or not Par opts in, and if a writers strike is settled in short order, MGM will try to start production before March. Stallone's partner, Kevin King, will be a producer.

DiVad's Box Office Weekend Report: Nov. 2-4

THE TOP FIVE REPORT

Hello fellow tentacles, DiVad here with the box office weekend report of Nov 2 -4. 'American Gangster' busted a cap in the competition and shot it's way up to number one this weekend with an estimated 46.3 million dollars.

The Denzel Washington/Russel Crowe/Ridley Scott crime drama epic is now the best opening of both Washington and Crowe's career to date. 'Bee Movie' landed in second place this weekend with 39.1 million in the bank. Not too bad, but these day it's not too special of an opening for a high profile animated movie. 'Saw IV' gets chopped down to 3rd place at 11.1million bucks. With any luck the studio will just quit while they're ahead (the 'saw' franchise is turning into the Jason and Freddy franchises for me. Just one after another same shit new number) The Steve Carrell drama 'Dan in Real life' hits 4th place with 8.1 million dollars. And '30 Days of Night' sucks enough cash to hang in at 5th place with 4 million buckaroos.

TOP 10
Box Office
1. American Gangster

4. Dan in Real Life
5. 30 Days of Night

DiVad's 80's MOVIE FLASHBACK MINI-REVIEW: THE LAST STARFIGHTER

Hey folks DiVad back again, this time with another posting of "80's MOVIE FLASHBACK MINI-REVIEW" I have, like many others this addicting service called Netflix and recently I've been on 80's movie mode. (I guess it's the new Indy and the new Rambo, Transformers, G.I. Joe and God knows what other 80's franchise they are desperately trying to reinvent) Anyway, when old movies pop into my head that I used to love when i was a kid, I wonder, would this movie still hold up now? Maybe not the special effects but will it still be a good movie to watch now that I'm 27 yrs. old and did the whole "film school" thing? Well I've been renting a whole bunch of them online, big budget classics and those good ol' HBO/straight to video ones. Which one will I flashback too today?

INT. SPACESHIP- A NOT TOO REALISITIC PLASTIC EVIL ALEIN COMMAND CENTER SET

The two evil alien commanders stand next to a large plastic well that is showing the status of their space craft as all these sparks explode around them.

Evil Alien Commander#1
"Were being pulled into he moon's gravitational pull!! What do we do?"

Commander#2 Looks up at Evil commander #1 slowly even though the ship is about to hit a fucking moon. A plasic clear sunglass thing covers one eye like a high tech pirate eye patch (zzzzzzzz)

Evil Alein Commander#2
(pause) "WE DIE"
EXT. SPACE

The Evil Ship hits the fucking moon. Good Guy ship flys by the screen. (yahooo!! cue music)

FADE OUT:

They don't make movies quite the same as in the 80's anymore. THE LAST STARFIGHTER (1984) is a little proof of that. Young Alex Rogen (Lance Guest) is a good teenage kid living in a crusty trailer park out in the woods. Even though he looks about 30 years old he's apparently 18 because he is trying to get into a good college when he graduates high school. One night while playing an old arcade style game called 'the last starfighter ' he gets the high score ("You's gonna bust the record!!") But the game is not really a game its a training tool put on earth to recruit young boys as spaceship fighters to save the galaxy. Young-ish Alex soon get's picked up by an alien who looks like the "music man" but drives a alien car/ship that looks like a decked out Delorean and whisks him out into space to save the galaxy from an evil alien armada.

This movie was one of the first to ever use computer generated images to create the special effect shots. Practically all the sequences in space are CGI and they still look pretty damn good. Nothing like today but kick-ass for 1984. This movie was most likely green lit post" Star Wars" phenomenon and Universal was hoping to ride off the super sucess of that franchise. While it was not as successful as 'Star Wars' or 'Star Trek' , THE LAST STARFIGHTER has become a 80's sci fi mini-classic and still gets you feeling like a little kid when you watch it. Bottom line:Just like that old black janitor says at the end of the movie, "This baby really packs a punch!!!"

ORIGINAL TRAILER

CLIP: "WHAT DO WE DO?......." "WE DIE!!"

Heres some released footage from the upcoming TRANSFORMERS ANIMATED series thats coming out sometime in 2008. Its kinda edgy fast animation TEEN TITANS looking. Well see what you guys think? Me personally Ill reserve judgment till it comes out. As long as it doesn't have annoying little kids screwing up the plot or any fucking Pokemon crossovers I guess im cool with it. Also notice how the live action movie has influenced the new look and story. Megatron is right out of the movie, also they want the ALLSPARK. I like the new TF theme but not digging Primes younger voice it needs to have a bit more fucking John Wayne in it.

Narc13 here. I know Halloween is lone gone already but I couldn't resist not putting up this pic of some of us in costume. We won 1st place in the JOHN MARTINS costume contest. If your ever in Miami you must go there its a fucking great Irish pub. I didn't have much time on Thursday or Friday to put up the pic. But heres you go. CLOCKWORK ORANGE!

Alecc B. on "American Gangster"

It's been a very long time since we've seen a great gangster film. Road To Perdition was a classy mobster-flick, but I'm talking about the grimy, tough guy, extremely violent-type gangster film. No, The Departed doesn't count because it was more about dirty cops than anything.

To my recollection, the last hard-nosed gangster flick was Casino. My memory is pretty bad, but that's what comes to mind. That film came out 12 years ago.

Now, in 2007, we have American Gangster. Judging by the trailers, this flick had everything working for it. Ridley Scott was behind the camera while powerhouse actors like Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were in front. This was going to be a triumphant return for this genre. Instead, we are given a good movie, but not great like it was supposed to be.

PLOT

Frank Lucas was the loyal henchman to one of the top crime bosses in Harlem, circa late 1960's, until that boss died. Frank decided this was his chance to shine, so he constructed a plan that essentially put him and his entire family at the top of the drug business, even above the mafia.

Richie Roberts is a ridiculously honest cop that has a penchant for sleeping around. Is that really a bad thing? Either way, while his personal life falls apart, he doesn't really care because all that's on his mind is bringing down whoever is responsible for all this silly dope business.

ACTING

Okay, I've said it before and I'll say it again, Denzel Washington plays the same guy in every movie. He brings absolutely nothing new to each film. None of that matters though, because Washington is always a joy to watch. You know what to expect and he doesn't disappoint here as Frank. Russell Crowe, as Richie, is more into becoming the character. He piled on some pasta for this flick and puts on a satisfactory New York accent. Crowe is another actor you can always depend on to bring the goods. Filling out Frank's family business is Chiwetel Ejiofor, Common, and T.I.. They're all decent in their roles. Ruby Dee plays Mama Lucas. It was great to see her again, but it seemed like she was struggling with her dialogue a good chunk of the movie. Josh Brolin plays a dirty cop that goes by the name of Trupo. Brolin is great and you will truly dislike his character. Carla "sweet ass" Gugino shows up as Richie's ex-wife Laurie. She's only in a couple of scenes but she does well in both. Two other actors showed up and put a smile on my face, but not in a good way. Those guys are Cuba Gooding Jr. and Armand Assante. I just can't take either of them seriously, and that hurts the scenes that they're in. Other familiar faces show up, but I'll let you spot them on your own.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Steven Zaillian brought his writing skills to the table for American Gangster. The first half of the story kind of felt all over the place for me. But once Frank started building his business, the story started to come together. The police investigation aspect was handled very well. I liked Frank's side of the story, but one thing I had a problem with was his family. See, when Frank started setting things up, he calls up his family, who are living pretty poorly at the moment, but they look like good people. Their turnaround is too sudden for me. They witness Frank kill somebody in public and seem genuinely shocked, but then the next time you see them they're comfortable being gangsters. I didn't buy their transition.

The story of Frank Lucas is interesting. I've never heard of him before, but he sounds like a smart guy. The way he gets his heroin into the country from Vietnam is brilliant and terrible at the same time.

Ridley Scott is one the best old school directors still doing his thing amongst all the younger guys trying to take over the film business. Antoine Fuqua was the original director on board for Gangster, but the budget was getting too high so he dropped out. Scott stepped in and shot this flick for the same budget Fuqua had presented. That's Hollywood for you.

Gangster has a good look to it. It's almost shot like a film back in the 70's, just with a little more polish. The biggest problem here is the pacing in the first hour. Besides the fact that the story jumped around a lot, the actual scenes themselves moved really slow during that first half.

The best scene involves a sit-down between Washington and Crowe. Watching these two reminded me of the scene in Heat when Robert De Niro and Al Pacino sit at the diner and just talk. It's always a pleasure to see actors that are so good at their craft just work off of each other.

The soundtrack was fantastic too. Try not to bob your head and sing along to "Across 110th Street" when it starts playing.

I was hoping that American Gangster would join the ranks of Goodfellas, Carlito's Way, and the overrated ("YEAH, I SAID IT!") Scarface. While it is refreshing to see a big-budget mobster-flick like American Gangster make it to the big screen, I was still a tad disappointed with the final product.

Overall Review: **1/2 stars

Best Lines:

Washington: I'm paying you by the hour, not the minute.

Crowe: You know what we do here? Cops arrest bad guys.
