"INKHEADS TOP 13 CULT CLASSICS"

#13.LEVIATHAN (1989)

"Welcome to your worst nightmare, welcome to Leviathan" That was the tag line to this 1989 cult underwater monster flick starring Peter "Murphy" Weller aka Robocop. Him and the gang are deep sea miners who find an old Soviet Wreck and bring some mutant thing on board .... well its kinda like "The Abyss" mixed with "The Thing" only cheaper.
#12.DR.GIGGLES (1992)

The psychopathic son of a mass-murdering doctor, escapes from his mental institution to seek revenge on the town where his father was caught. Larry Drake( the bad guy from Darkman and Darkman 2) plays Dr. Giggles.
#11.NIGHT OF THE CREEPS (1986)

"It's MILLER time !!!"
In 1959, an alien experiment crashes to earth and infects a fraternity member. They freeze the body, but in the modern day, two geeks pledging a fraternity accidentally thaw the corpse, which proceeds to infect the campus with parasites that transform their hosts into killer zombies.
#10.DEAD ALIVE aka BRAIN DEAD (1992)

A young man's mother is bitten by a "rat- monkey." She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. Way before "Lord of the Rings", Peter "EAT LEAD SUCKA!!" Jackson Directed this blood fest thats so absurd it's awesome!
#9. C.H.U.D. (1984)

A rash of bizarre murders in New York City seems to point to a group of grotesquely deformed vagrants living in the sewers. A policeman, a photo journalist and his girlfriend, and a nutty bum, band together to try and determine what the creatures are and how to stop them.
#8. HOUSE (1986)

"Ding dong, you're dead." William Katt aka "The Greatest American Hero" moves into a new house and tries to work on a novel based on his experiences in the Vietnam War. Strange things start happening around him; little things at first, but as they become more frequent he becomes aware that the house resents his presence.
#7. FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)

Charlie Brewster (the Herman from Herman's Head) and his girl, Marcy from Married with Children think their neighbor is a vampire so of course the only one who can help him hunt them down is a washed-up actor, Peter Vincent, who hosts Charlie's favorite TV show, Fright Night.
#6. CREEP-SHOW (1982)

Inspired by the E.C. comics of the 1950s, George A.Romero and Stephen King bring five tales of terror to the screen. The first deals with a demented old man returning from the grave to get the Father's Day cake. The second is about a not-too-bright farmer discovering a meteor that turns everything into plant-life. The third is about a vengeful husband burying his wife and her lover up to their necks on the beach. The fourth is about a creature that resides in a crate under the steps of a college. The final story is about an ultra-rich businessman who gets his comeuppance from cockroaches.
#5. LIFE FORCE (1985)

A space shuttle mission investigating Halley's Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London's population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible
#4. SHOCKWAVES (1977)

This horror movie concerns a shipwrecked yachting party. Rose (Brooke Adams) and her fellow yacht-mates, including the captain (John Carradine) run aground on an island when they hit an odd-looking freighter. Once beached, they meet up with an aging SS Commander (Peter Cushing) who had been in charge of a crew of zombies.
#3. THE SERPRNT and the RAINBOW (1988)

"Don't bury me...I'm not dead!" An anthropologist (Bill Pulman) goes to Haiti after hearing rumors about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people in zombies.
#2. SHADOW of the VAMPPIRE (2000)

Max Schreck's performance in the classic film Nosferatu has become legendary. What if the reason he was so good is that he really was a vampire? That's the premise of this film, which features director F.W. Murnau so enamored with creating the perfect vampire film that he seeks out an actual member of the undead to play the title role. But when Schreck starts taking more and more advantage of the opportunities to feed he suddenly has, can Murnau come to his senses and destroy him?
#1. GLITTER (2001)

No film ever made has come close to giving the proper chills and deep dark haunting fear than this Mariah Carrey crapola crap-fest. Absolutely terrifying. My eyes my eyes they burn...

AKIRA: Live Action?

Heres another one of those projects I would love to see get made the right way! Just like the MADMAX story I posted last week it now seems that Katsuhiro Otomo's anime classic Akira
Is picking up steam. The studios are trying to get this baby rolling before the Writers guild strike. Thats garbage news already you do not rush a film like this to have in the can before the strike. Its gonna be helmed by director Ruairi Robinson (The Silent City)??? Never seen that film so I cant comment on this director but for such a well known cult film like this cant they get a better known name for it ? This is bitter sweet I'm glad this film is back in the works but man it sounds like they are screwing it up already. Oh well for those of you not versed in the art of AKIRA heres a synopsis via WIKIPIDEA.And heres a RE-CUT trailer of the anime AKIRA:
And this is the movie KANYE WEST copied in his Stronger video.

DiVad's 80's MOVIE FLASHBACK MINI-REVIEW
Released in 1986, Universal Pictures big budget "epic" film is basically about a midget in a duck suit (but is really a talking sophisticated duck even though it looks like a midget in a duck suit) That gets beamed to Earth in some freak scientific experiment and has to get back home. Oh yea in the meantime: battle some evil alien stop-motion monsters, flee from stupid 80's cops in a bicycle plane with "Andy" (Tim Robbins), fall in love with "Marty McFly's" mom (Lea Thompson) and of course play kick-ass guitar while saving the world first.
The movie flopped... big time and is still today considered one of the classic bombs in recent memory. Now technically the movie is not that badly done for 1986. (Aside from that whole: "midget in a duck suit thing") It had 'big dog' ILM doing the stop- motion and matte paintings and a shit load of old school optical electricity and laser beam effects. Now used to love this movie when I was six or seven and my dad would always groan and make this disgusting face every time I told him to play the movie. I never understood why? Who didn't love Howard the Duck? Well I understand now my father's pain. I love me a good ol' fantasy flick but can you imagine being an adult when this movie came out and having to sit there and watch this with your kid? Bottom line: Not even Tim Robbins and the weirdo child molester principle from 'Ferris Buller's Day Off' can save this stinker of 80's cheese and I mean that in a bad way. (But It's still a movie to watch piss drunk and laugh) note: This movie is not on DVD yet I actually found someone who has a VHS copy so Netflix can't help here.
Don't belive me check out some clips below:
INTRO SCENE: (why?)
BAR FIGHT: (looks too good to be a "midget in a duck suit")
DINER ACTION!!! (check out the classic 80's Starwars old school optical electricity fx)
Alecc B. on "Dan In Real Life"

Do you guys watch The Office? If not, you need to. The entire cast is great, but Steve Carell stands out as the incompetent man in charge, Michael. There are so many awkward and uncomfortable situations that seem like they wouldn't be as bad if Michael just shut his mouth from time to time. Carell plays that role to perfection.
As far as films go, Carell's best performances are in and The 40-Year Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine. He tried his hand at a big-budget family film with Evan Almighty, which was one of the biggest flops this year. I can't even think of one part in any of the trailers that looked funny.
Now, Carell gives us Dan In Real Life. I guess the best way to describe this movie is to call it a bland version of The Family Stone.
PLOT
Dan Burns is a newspaper columnist who people write to for advice. He's a widower with three children that just tries to set a good example. All four of them go on vacation to spend time with the rest of their family. While in town, Dan meets Marie, an out-of-towner, and instantly has a connection with her. After they part ways, Dan goes back to his family's house to tell everyone about it. That's when his younger brother Mitch introduces him to his new girlfriend. Yep, Mitch is dating Marie. OH SNAP!
ACTING
Carell is good as Dan. He balances the comedic and dramatic elements well. Juliette Binoche plays Marie light and breezy. She seemed to have a good time making this flick. Dane Cook, as Mitch, is absolutely terrible here. There are scenes in this flick where Cook will say his lines and you'll actually cringe. Sure, the dialogue wasn't anything special, but Cook isn't gifted enough to make them work anyway. There is one scene in particular when Cook sings in front of the family. Oh...my...word. Just awful. As Dan's parents, Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney are underused. The sexy Emily Blunt shows up for a couple of scenes and looks oh-so-scrumptious!
WRITING & DIRECTING
Peter Hedges and Pierce Gardner wrote the script for this flick. Movies with a simple premise like Dan In Real Life are elevated to a good place when the writing is strong. That's not what happened here. The dialogue is pretty stale throughout the film, and the characters of the family aren't really that developed, so it never feels like you're watching a real family. They're just familiar faces all together in one flick.
The character of Marie never really gained any sympathy from me either. I mean, she's constantly flirting with Dan even after she knows he is Mitch's brother. What a whore!
Hedges directs here too, and doesn't really add anything to Life besides stale direction and slow pacing. There are only two scenes in the movie that actually put a smile on my face. One involves Cook singing before the God-awful performance I mentioned earlier. The other scene has Carell dancing like a fool at a local bar. Those two scenes were very funny and left something to be desired for the rest of the film. That desire was never fulfilled.
While not being completely terrible, Dan In Real Life is still pretty weak.

It looks like a new MADMAX movie is picking up steam once again. A report out of MOVIEHOLE says movie effects houses are being scoped out for "MAD MAX: FURY ROAD"... Baddass right! Moviehole says Mel Gibson will not be back this time around I know that sucks because he is Mad fucking Max. But a MADMAX movie with todays effects and stunts makes me fucking druel. George Miller the director of MADMAX is attached to JUSTICE LEAGUE aswell. And please don't handcough him with restrictions and small tight budgets like they did George A. Alecc B. on "30 Days Of Night"

Vampire movies are tough to make these days. Lately, they're either campy fun like From Dusk Till Dawn or action flicks like the Blade and Underworld series, but they're rarely scary. The truth of the matter is, there's not too much else you can do in a vampire movie that's original anymore...except set the movie in Alaska of course. This is the setting for 30 Days Of Night!
PLOT
The last day of sunlight is coming to an end in a small town in Alaska, and nightfall will be all anyone sees for 30 days. You know what else they'll see? Mutha fuckin' vampires!
ACTING
Josh Hartnett takes the hero-role as the town sheriff, Eben. Surprisingly, Hartnett didn't bore me to tears this time around like he usually does and handles most of the ass-kicking. Melissa George plays his wife Stella. STELLA!!!!!!!! I had to. Anyway, Eben and Stella are having problems and the two lead actors do their best to show us that. They succeed for the most part. There are an assorted group of people trying to survive, but I'll just talk about a couple of the stand-outs. Mark Rendall plays Eben's brother Jake. He's scared for most of the movie but never annoying. As the town loner Beau, Mark Boone Jr. looks as scruffy as always, but he kicks mucho ass here. Danny Huston plays the head vampire Marlow. He doesn't do much but look creepy, and does a pretty good job. When he does speak though, it's some other language like French...or Chinese. Just kidding, it's sounded Russian to me. I could be wrong though. Ben Foster plays The Stranger, a man who comes into town and starts to cause trouble before the vamps show up. Foster has done nothing but play crazy people this whole year. Can you say...typecast?
WRITING & DIRECTING
30 Days Of Night was adapted into a film by the original author of the graphic novel, Steve Niles. He got some help from Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson. The story works very well. Imagine living in a place with no sunlight for a month. Then imagine that place is being populated by hungry vamps. Not cool. The setting of Alaska puts a lot of exciting scenes in place that wouldn't work if the film took place anywhere else. I do think that the story moved a little fast at times, making it seem like it wasn't complete hell during these 30 days. I could of dealt without a bit of dialogue that came from a little girl in the second half of the film as well.
Director David Slade gave Night a very cool look. It's dark and gray, but still vivid. I kind of got the vibe I felt while watching John Carpenter's The Thing. The editing is tight and there are quite a few scares. Slade also did not hold back on the gore. There is plenty-o-blood shed throughout this film, and a couple of very graphic scenes involving decapitations. I know what you're thinking...COOL!
The ending for this flick was ripped right out of one of the Blade movies. I won't say which one in fear of ruining it for you guys. Then again, I never read the novel, so the ending might be faithful and Blade could have been the one who stole the idea. I'm thinking way too much about this.
If you're looking for an entertaining horror flick for a late Friday or Saturday night, 30 Days Of Night should deliver the goods for you.
Overall Review: **1/2 stars

Alecc B. on "Gone Baby Gone"

In all honesty, I can say that I feel bad for Ben Affleck. After the debacle that was his relationship with Jennifer Lopez, Affleck's acting career has taken a nose-dive due to all the bad publicity he got. With the exception of the critical praise and Golden Globe nomination he received for Hollywoodland, The Fleck hasn't made a movie that people saw since Daredevil that was a hit, and that movie was pretty terrible as well.
So The Fleck has taken a break from acting and is making his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, which is also the first script he's written since winning an Academy Award for Good Will Hunting. Come to think of it, if I was Ben, and someone said I sucked, I'd carry that Oscar around and just be like, "You see this shit? That's right!" I'm sure Cuba Gooding Jr. has been doing that for the past ten years, and will probably continue to do so for the rest of his life.
With Gone Baby Gone, The Fleck has tried one last time to leave a mark in Hollywood. Does he succeed? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck ya-self. Sorry, The Departed popped into my head. What I meant to say was, yes!
PLOT
A little girl goes missing in Boston. Two private investigators, Patrick and Angie, who are also romantically involved, are hired by the family of the missing girl to help the police with the search. There are people that won't talk to cops, and that's where Patrick and Angie come in. What starts out as a straight forwrad case turns into a situation with plenty of twists and hardcore Bahh-ston accents!
ACTING
Casey Affleck shines as Patrick. He's very comfortable in the lead role and even though he's a tiny guy, I totally bought him as someone who could defend himself. Michelle Monaghan plays Angie, a character that is worried how this case will affect her, no matter how it turns out. Monaghan is getting her face out there more often now, and besides the fact that she's super cute, she can really act. Her performance here is very good. Ed Harris plays one of the detectives working on the case, Remy Bressant. I don't know about you, but I look forward to seeing Harris get angry. He just looks and acts like one seriously mean mutha fucka and he carries that attitude into this film as well as he does in about every other movie. His partner, Nick Poole, is played by John Ashton. I don't think I've seen this guy since Beverly Hills Cop 2. He looks a little older and slimmer, but you can recognize him as soon as you see him. Very cool to see him on the big-screen again. Someone who looks very different now is Amy Madigan, who seems to have put on a ton of weight since Field Of Dreams. She plays the missing little girls' aunt, Beatrice. There is a whole lot-o-sadness in Beatrice, and Madigan makes that obvious even when she's not saying anything. As Beatrice's husband and brother to the mother of the girl, Lionel is played by Titus Welliver. He's pretty good but his mustache is distracting. Amy Ryan is great as Helene, the little girl's mother. There are times that you'll hate her for being a terrible mother, and other times you'll simply pity her. Morgan Freeman shows up as Jack Doyle, the man who is running the investigation. I don't think I need to say anything about his performance. We all know Freeman is the man. The Fleck wisely decided not to put himself in this film.
WRITING & DIRECTING
The Fleck had some help from Aaron Stockard in adapting Dennis Lehane's novel for Gone Baby Gone into a film. The story has a nice flow to it. The Fleck has a good ear for dialogue, as proven before with Hunting. I guess the only problem I had with the story was when it was revealed who was behind the whole kidnapping of the girl. It felt like I was watching an episode of Law & Order. In other words, it was a little much for me. There's also a scene in a bar near the end that's a bit silly.
As a director, The Fleck definitely has some skill. He's subtle in his approach to shooting scenes, but it works for this film. Gone has a dreary look to it, much like the film adaptation for one of Lehane's other novels, Mystic River. Also, while trying to prove himself with this film, Ben Affleck has also transformed his younger brother Casey into a leading man.
Hopefully, Gone Baby Gone isn't gone from the theatres before you get a chance to check it out.
