Alecc B. on "30 Days Of Night"

Vampire movies are tough to make these days. Lately, they're either campy fun like From Dusk Till Dawn or action flicks like the Blade and Underworld series, but they're rarely scary. The truth of the matter is, there's not too much else you can do in a vampire movie that's original anymore...except set the movie in Alaska of course. This is the setting for 30 Days Of Night!

PLOT

The last day of sunlight is coming to an end in a small town in Alaska, and nightfall will be all anyone sees for 30 days. You know what else they'll see? Mutha fuckin' vampires!

ACTING

Josh Hartnett takes the hero-role as the town sheriff, Eben. Surprisingly, Hartnett didn't bore me to tears this time around like he usually does and handles most of the ass-kicking. Melissa George plays his wife Stella. STELLA!!!!!!!! I had to. Anyway, Eben and Stella are having problems and the two lead actors do their best to show us that. They succeed for the most part. There are an assorted group of people trying to survive, but I'll just talk about a couple of the stand-outs. Mark Rendall plays Eben's brother Jake. He's scared for most of the movie but never annoying. As the town loner Beau, Mark Boone Jr. looks as scruffy as always, but he kicks mucho ass here. Danny Huston plays the head vampire Marlow. He doesn't do much but look creepy, and does a pretty good job. When he does speak though, it's some other language like French...or Chinese. Just kidding, it's sounded Russian to me. I could be wrong though. Ben Foster plays The Stranger, a man who comes into town and starts to cause trouble before the vamps show up. Foster has done nothing but play crazy people this whole year. Can you say...typecast?

WRITING & DIRECTING

30 Days Of Night was adapted into a film by the original author of the graphic novel, Steve Niles. He got some help from Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson. The story works very well. Imagine living in a place with no sunlight for a month. Then imagine that place is being populated by hungry vamps. Not cool. The setting of Alaska puts a lot of exciting scenes in place that wouldn't work if the film took place anywhere else. I do think that the story moved a little fast at times, making it seem like it wasn't complete hell during these 30 days. I could of dealt without a bit of dialogue that came from a little girl in the second half of the film as well.

Director David Slade gave Night a very cool look. It's dark and gray, but still vivid. I kind of got the vibe I felt while watching John Carpenter's The Thing. The editing is tight and there are quite a few scares. Slade also did not hold back on the gore. There is plenty-o-blood shed throughout this film, and a couple of very graphic scenes involving decapitations. I know what you're thinking...COOL!

The ending for this flick was ripped right out of one of the Blade movies. I won't say which one in fear of ruining it for you guys. Then again, I never read the novel, so the ending might be faithful and Blade could have been the one who stole the idea. I'm thinking way too much about this.

If you're looking for an entertaining horror flick for a late Friday or Saturday night, 30 Days Of Night should deliver the goods for you.

Alecc B. on "Gone Baby Gone"

In all honesty, I can say that I feel bad for Ben Affleck. After the debacle that was his relationship with Jennifer Lopez, Affleck's acting career has taken a nose-dive due to all the bad publicity he got. With the exception of the critical praise and Golden Globe nomination he received for Hollywoodland, The Fleck hasn't made a movie that people saw since Daredevil that was a hit, and that movie was pretty terrible as well.

So The Fleck has taken a break from acting and is making his directorial debut with Gone Baby Gone, which is also the first script he's written since winning an Academy Award for Good Will Hunting. Come to think of it, if I was Ben, and someone said I sucked, I'd carry that Oscar around and just be like, "You see this shit? That's right!" I'm sure Cuba Gooding Jr. has been doing that for the past ten years, and will probably continue to do so for the rest of his life.

With Gone Baby Gone, The Fleck has tried one last time to leave a mark in Hollywood. Does he succeed? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck ya-self. Sorry, The Departed popped into my head. What I meant to say was, yes!

PLOT

A little girl goes missing in Boston. Two private investigators, Patrick and Angie, who are also romantically involved, are hired by the family of the missing girl to help the police with the search. There are people that won't talk to cops, and that's where Patrick and Angie come in. What starts out as a straight forwrad case turns into a situation with plenty of twists and hardcore Bahh-ston accents!

ACTING

Casey Affleck shines as Patrick. He's very comfortable in the lead role and even though he's a tiny guy, I totally bought him as someone who could defend himself. Michelle Monaghan plays Angie, a character that is worried how this case will affect her, no matter how it turns out. Monaghan is getting her face out there more often now, and besides the fact that she's super cute, she can really act. Her performance here is very good. Ed Harris plays one of the detectives working on the case, Remy Bressant. I don't know about you, but I look forward to seeing Harris get angry. He just looks and acts like one seriously mean mutha fucka and he carries that attitude into this film as well as he does in about every other movie. His partner, Nick Poole, is played by John Ashton. I don't think I've seen this guy since Beverly Hills Cop 2. He looks a little older and slimmer, but you can recognize him as soon as you see him. Very cool to see him on the big-screen again. Someone who looks very different now is Amy Madigan, who seems to have put on a ton of weight since Field Of Dreams. She plays the missing little girls' aunt, Beatrice. There is a whole lot-o-sadness in Beatrice, and Madigan makes that obvious even when she's not saying anything. As Beatrice's husband and brother to the mother of the girl, Lionel is played by Titus Welliver. He's pretty good but his mustache is distracting. Amy Ryan is great as Helene, the little girl's mother. There are times that you'll hate her for being a terrible mother, and other times you'll simply pity her. Morgan Freeman shows up as Jack Doyle, the man who is running the investigation. I don't think I need to say anything about his performance. We all know Freeman is the man. The Fleck wisely decided not to put himself in this film.

WRITING & DIRECTING

The Fleck had some help from Aaron Stockard in adapting Dennis Lehane's novel for Gone Baby Gone into a film. The story has a nice flow to it. The Fleck has a good ear for dialogue, as proven before with Hunting. I guess the only problem I had with the story was when it was revealed who was behind the whole kidnapping of the girl. It felt like I was watching an episode of Law & Order. In other words, it was a little much for me. There's also a scene in a bar near the end that's a bit silly.

As a director, The Fleck definitely has some skill. He's subtle in his approach to shooting scenes, but it works for this film. Gone has a dreary look to it, much like the film adaptation for one of Lehane's other novels, Mystic River. Also, while trying to prove himself with this film, Ben Affleck has also transformed his younger brother Casey into a leading man.

Hopefully, Gone Baby Gone isn't gone from the theatres before you get a chance to check it out.

Alecc B. on "We Own The Night"

About a year ago, The Departed came out and
revitalized the tough guy movie. Leonardo DiCaprio finally looked like a man and not like a scrawny little sissy anymore, which helped when it came to
holding his own against the other big dogs on screen. But, with a great success like Departed, imitators are sure to follow.

This week, we have We Own The Night. The trailers try to push that it has that Departed feel to it, but the film falls kind of short of those expectations.

PLOT

Bobby Green is a popular guy. He manages a night club in 1988 New York that just happens to be owned by the Russians that his father and brother, who happen to be police officers, are investigating. Now, Bobby is left with the choice of helping his family or betraying them!!! Oh snap!!!

ACTING

Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic as Bobby. In Night, Phoenix accomplishes the same feat he does with every film, and that is totally lose himself in the character. Whenever he is on-screen, no one else matters. As Bobby's brother Joseph, Mark Wahlberg basically recycles his performance from The Departed, only it's not as good. Robert Duvall mostly coasts through this film as their father Burt, but it's The Duvall, he can get away with it. Eva Mendes plays Bobby's girl Amada. She's good when she doesn't have to show too much emotion. Her scenes that involve her being drunk or high are probably the most believable. Even though her performance wasn't mind-blowing, I still (heart) her. She's quite pleasant to look at. Alex Veadov plays what is essentially the main baddie who wages war on the cops, Vadim. He plays the role very calm and to good effect.

WRITING & DIRECTING

James Gray handled both screenwriting and directing duties here. Let's talk about his script. The story is pretty simple and not all that original. What makes We Own the Night work is the dialogue, which is pretty solid and gives the cast a lot of meat to chew on.

The film is visually pleasing. I mean, who can complain when a movie starts with Eva Mendes all coked up on a couch and letting a nipple slip? No one, that's right. The scenes of violence are well shot and edited, having no problem building up suspense. The standout action sequence is a car chase that takes place under heavy rain. I tip my hat to Mr. Gray for that one.

I will say that the climax is very underwhelming, considering all that took place before it. That was a bit of a disappointment, along with the so-so acting I mentioned above.

The final scene of the film is very touching though. It involves two characters exchanging two easy bits of dialogue, but that scene is the one I remember best, besides Mendes' nipple slip of course.

Overall Review: ** 1/2 stars

Duvall: If you piss in your pants, you can only stay warm for so long.

Zombies on a Mo!@#$ Fu@#$%^ PLANE!

My cheese movie of the weeks is :

Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane.

If you like zombie nuns with missing limbs and oh yes very important...
on a plane, then this is for you. As Far as good " bad horror movies" goes, this is a really good one. Don't let the whole "Living dead" Romero knock off series thing scare you off this isn't the same shit. The original name for the film was "Plane Dead", which is a crap name, I guess that's`why it was changed to the more interesting and comical title of Flight of the Living Dead. I know I know , Snakes on a on a plane same sh*t different bad acting ,But I promise you there's no Jody foster in this one (sorry" Flight plan " or Panic room II " or whatever you called it.) She was the bomb in CONTACT though right? But back to my original rant....The story sticks to the plot of most zombie movies, The only real difference is the detail that they use to explain what the virus really is . ( I know I know Resident evil does give a shitty explanation, and yes it is kinda like the "T" virus , but remember that's not a zombie movie, its a video game movie . There's a difference, and of course...its on a plane! Which is really messed up concerning you can hide in a missile silo, or a chopping mall ( LOL like the pun ?) But not in a fu@$%&g plane. So a group of scientist are working on a " virus" developed from a mosquito that lives in Africa that will re-generate dead tissue on soldiers in battle. Two of the scientist are married one becomes infected so they attempted to fly her out of the country . ahem! While in flight the plane gets into a nasty Storm .She escapes and all the fun begins. The Acting for a "B" movie is great, Especially if you don't mind movies that contain other well known "oh that guy" actors.
Such as Kevin J. O'Connor, Who!?! Swann from Lord of Illusions ! Say it together now children "oh that guy" hes a con artist which is being escorted to stand trial for some shady accounting concerning the mob. The usual story. We also have one of his buddy's from the mummy on board Erick Avari . He was the old dude with the odd beard in " Mr.Deeds. Again "oh that guy". If you happen to see the actual commercial while flipping through channels maybe in between robot chicken and the girls gone wild infomercial, he's the zombie that gets sucked into the jet engines, yes ladies and gentlemen! A FUCKING JET ENGINE. WOW! As in any true good Zombie movie, there is no happy ending . But you never really know what happens to the characters.
So go out and get this one .If you have the same love for cheesball movies as I do this is a great one to watch!

ATARIO OUT!

DiVad's TOP 5 Double Feature Movie Trailers (ACTION-ADVENTURE/ WAR)

DiVad here with round two of my top 5 series. This weeks genre: 'War' and 'Action/Adventure' Movie Trailers.

I've been working as a projectionist at a local theater for almost 10 years and I've seen a lot of trailers. Most are bad, some are good, a few are great. It's hard to put the best trailers on a top 5 list so I had to split them into film genres. Forget if the movie sucked or not, were talking trailers only here. We've all fallen for the marketing tricks.(The awesome trailer that ends up being a good ol' piece of Hollywood crap and the awful trailer that ends up becoming the year's best movie.) I'll be back soon with another top 5.

Alecc B. on "The Heartbreak Kid"

I'm sure Neil Simon is turning in his grave right now. What? He's not dead?! Oh, well, then that might actually be worse because now he can go see what Peter and Bobby Farrelly have done to remake his story for The Heartbreak Kid.

The Farrelly Bros. have kind of tanked for almost a decade now. They started off great by giving us Jim Carrey's funniest film, Dumb And Dumber. Following that was their underrated Kingpin, with the brilliant Bill Murray in full-on asshole mode. One of the Farrelly's biggest hits would have to be 1998's There's Something About Mary, a film that was very funny the first couple of times I'd seen it, but hasn't aged well since. After those flicks, the Farrelly's have written and directed nothing but mediocre films like Shallow Hal, Stuck On You, and Me, Myself, And Irene.

I'm not saying that the 2007 update for Heartbreak is completely terrible, but it is far more boring than it is funny. This Ben Stiller comedy also kills the good streak R-rated comedies had going for them this year.

PLOT

Eddie Cantrow has a commitment problem. One day, he meets Lila, a beautiful blonde that he tries to help after she's mugged. They hit it off and Eddie decides to take the plunge and asks her to marry him. For their honeymoon, they drive down to Mexico to enjoy Cabo San Lucas! On their road trip though, Eddie begins to see that Lila isn't the woman he thought she was. Upon discovering that Lila could be certifiablycrazy, Eddie begins to regret his choice to marry her. But that's not all!!!! I know, you're bursting with fruit flavor right now! While on this vacation from hell, Eddie meets Miranda, a cute and easy-going woman who's traveling with her family. They have an almost instant connection, and now Eddie must decide if he wants to stay with his psycho for a wife or go with what his heart is telling him.

ACTING

With the exception of a few scenes, Stiller looks absolutely bored here as Eddie. Maybe he's just tired of playing the same guy that has the worst luck with women. I know I'm tired of seeing him in this kind of role. Malin ("I'm the chick who had a threesome with E and Sloan on Entourage!") Akerman has a great time playing Lila. I believe this is her biggest film role so far, and she doesn't hold back. It also doesn't hurt that she's smokin' hot and gets nekked a few times. Boom! Michelle Monaghan plays Miranda, and brings the best out in Stiller during their scenes together. The chemistry between them is very nice and Monaghan just seems so natural. In other words, if I was on vacation and met a girl like her, I would be drawn to her just as easily as Eddie is. Stiller's real-life father, Jerry, plays his on-screen father here, Doc. He's funny in a couple of scenes, but nothing like the great stuff he brought to Seinfeld or The King Of Queens. Rob Corddry plays the lame best friend back home, Mac, and his performance is…pretty lame. Unfortunately, whoever goes to see this film will have to sit through a few scenes with Carlos Mencia playing the hotel manager, Uncle Tito. Mencia is just not funny. He's an obnoxious comedian that is loud for the sake of being loud. In Heartbreak, he's tamed down, but still equally terrible.

WRITING & DIRECTING

The Farrelly Bros. has some help with script from Scot Armstrong, Leslie Dixon, and Kevin Barnett. With all of these brains put together, they still delivered a pretty dull screenplay. The biggest problem I found here was the fact that there was no build-up to show that there might be something wrong with Lila. At first, she's completely normal. As soon as they're married, she's a completely different character. Yes, there have been movie characters before that aren't who they originally seemed to be, but at least there were hints dropped to show that there's more to them.

As for the direction, it's pretty stale, like most Farrelly flicks. The best looking thing on-screen, besides the two female stars, is the hotel they stayed at. Now that looks like a nice place to have a vacation!

There are a couple of laugh out loud scenes, especially one sequence involving Stiller trying to sneak back into America from Mexico after his passport was destroyed. That scene had me in stitches and gave me hope that the rest of the film would end on a good note. Unfortunately they dragged the finale out longer than it should have been.

I know I'm making this film sound awful, and I have to admit that it's not. It's just not very good. The Heartbreak Kid falls into the "It Wasn't That Bad But I'll Probably Forget About It After Dinner The Next Day" category.

Overall Review: ** stars

new IRONMAN poster!

Lookie lookie what just popped out onto the net!

80's CHILHOOD

There was something magical about the cartoons when I was growing up that I don't see nowadays. Maybe I'm to old to see it anymore. Maybe kids today will be saying the same thing about there cartoons when they are my age, but one thing is for certain, Man cartoons kicked major ass in the 80s. They didn't look like poppy anime characters with bulging eyes and crazy hyper colored patterns for backgrounds. "Hell no" we had GIJOE, we had TRANSFORMERS, we had THUNDERCATS we had TMNT. Crazy ideas that till this day are memorable and iconic, so iconic that the loyal fan bases are the reason for an idea less Hollywood to continuously dip its hands into the 80s Optimus Prime cookie jar for the next big summer hit. So whether you love it or hate it, its the stuff my...our childhood was made of. Pure cheesy awesomeness. So until Transformers 2 or the GIJOE movie comes out watch these and sing along to get your nostalgic fixes.

DiVad's INTERNET PHENOMENON: WENG WENG!!!

Hi everyone, DiVad here to tell you a little something about my new friend Weng Weng. First off, you might be asking yourself what the hell is that?A fetus? A small potato? What is this..this.. Weng Weng? Well he's a 2 foot 9 inch super spy action hero from the Philippines named Agent 00. No, I'm not making this up. Little Weng Weng starred in many low budget films in the late 70's and early 80's such as "For Your Height Only" (1979) and "Impossible Kid" (1981). The bad ass runt busts drug cartels, gets chicks, carries around "cool" high-tech gadgets, and karate-chops lots of balls in the process.
More than 25 years later recent Weng Weng trailers and clips posted on Youtube has turned him into a cult internet mini phenomenon. Just search "weng weng" on Google or Youtube and you'll find plenty of crazy fan sites(even a French site with cartoons of Weng Weng ) and many clips of his action movies. They are so bad they're actually fun to watch . Alecc B. on "The Kingdom"

Like every country, I’m sure the Middle East has a lot of good in it. It’s a shame because we will rarely hear about that good because it’s always overshadowed by all the bad that takes place over there.

The Kingdom is probably one of the few movies to come out recently and showcase the good and bad sides of the Middle East. There are plenty of moments that fuel our rage and make us do nothing but hate the people that strap these bombs to their bodies in the name of Allah. The surprise here is that we get a look into the lives of the men who worship the same God but are fighting against terrorism instead of joining in. It’s a nice contrast that is only one component to a veritably great film.

PLOT

A terrorist attack is made on an American compound in Saudi Arabia, killing hundreds. In response, an FBI team of investigators is sent to find out who committed this crime and bring them to Holy War justice!!!!!

ACTING

Jamie Foxx plays Ronald Fleury, the man heading up the investigation. These are the kinds of movies Foxx can do well in. He underplays this role to good effect and refrains from being Funny-Foxx. His other team members consist of Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner, and Jason Bateman. Cooper plays Grant Sykes as a no-nonsense kind of guy, much like his other roles, but he acts well off of everyone else. Garner plays Janet Mayes in a very reserved manner. She’s the only female character in the crew, and besides holding her own with the boys, she has to deal with the rules and restrictions that the Middle East has for women. Garner conveys a lot of her frustrations through facial expressions and does a nice job here. She also slips into the bad-ass role a couple of times and you’ll love her for it! Jason Bateman is the last team member, Adam Leavitt. We all know we need some comic relief in a film like this, and Bateman is given most of the funny lines. He also handles the more dramatic scenes with ease. Ashraf Barhom and Ali Suliman play Colonel Faris Al Ghazi and Sergeant Haytham, the two Middle Eastern men assisting the FBI in this case. Barhom is fantastic and has great chemistry with Foxx. No, there’s no Brokeback-action, but the two of them develop a nice friendship throughout the film and the actors make it very believable. Haytham is reserved but it works for his role. Jeremy Piven shows up for a couple of scenes as Damon Schmidt. He’s basically Ari Gold with gray hair, and that’s not a bad thing at all. Ari is the shit…BOOM! Special shout-outs go to NBC’s Friday Night Lights’ cast members Kyle Chandler and Minka Kelly for showing their faces in a couple of scenes. I would love to get familiar with Ms. Kelly’s “minka”. She is scrumtrulecent!

WRITING & DIRECTING

Matthew Michael Carnahan is the writer on deck here. The story is fairly simple as it is just your standard action thriller about the FBI tracking down a killer. However, The Kingdom is not your average bang-bang-shoot-‘em-up flick. Carnahan dishes out a script that takes a familiar story and twists it into a wholly original one. The dialogue that comes out of everyone’s mouth feels fresh. Of course, the setting for this flick makes a world of difference by adding to the suspense that at any moment, you could be attacked.

Peter Berg has officially become one of my favorite directors. He’s acted in numerous films, including the underrated Aspen Extreme (YEAH, I SAID IT!!!!), and stepped behind the camera for the first time back in 1998. That film? Very Bad Things. If you haven’t seen that flick, you must see it A.S.A.P.!!!! It is definitely one of the darkest comedies you will ever see. Berg followed up Things with The Rundown, starring The Rock, which was much better than the silly action movie it could’ve been. After that? Friday Night Lights! I will say right now that Lights is the best football movie of all time! There’s intensity, feel-good moments, and some truly sad ones. An all-around perfect sports film.

Now Berg tackles The Kingdom, his most powerful film yet. From the opening credits, which are the most original and captivating of the year, this film grabs you and never lets go. From Berg’s intense, but controlled, handheld camerawork to the slam dunk editing, The Kingdom is quite the nail-biting movie-going experience.

Speaking of biting your nails, by now most of you have seen the commercials that say, “The last 30-minutes are so intense, you won’t be able to move.” I’m here to back up that quote. I’ve seen this film twice already and both times I felt the tension on-screen, especially during one no-holds barred fight-to-the-death sequence that’s sure to be the most talked about scene in the finale.

The Kingdom is the kind of movie that people will say, “You don’t want to miss!” That, my friends, is the truth!

Overall Review: **** stars

Best Lines:

Foxx: No, are you okay? He slapped you.

Bateman: I didn’t say “I”, I said “FBI”.

Alecc B. on "Into The Wild"

Everyone goes through a point in their life when they say to themselves, "I need a change." The problem with society is that most people never make that change. They continue living the same old boring life in hopes that one day a change will happen all on it's own.

Sean Penn has chosen to adapt the book Into The Wild and make it his fourth stab at directing. Wild tells the true story of a young man who wanted to make a change and did exactly that. Penn has always had a problem with pacing, and Wild has it's fair share of slow scenes, but it doesn't completely damage a film that is pretty powerful.

PLOT

Christopher McCandless has always been the reckless type. Even though his family is pretty wealthy, he never liked to just be given things. He wanted to earn them. This never sat well with his parents, but Chris never really cared, he just wanted to live his life in his own way. So in 1990, Chris gave away his tuition check to Harvard, destroyed everything that could be used to identify him, and set out to cross the country to reach his destination…Alaska. Adapting the name Alexander Supertramp, this young man encounters many different people and situations, all while hoofing it through the United States.

ACTING

Emile Hirsch is very impressive as Chris/Alex. He conveys being a free-spirit perfectly and has no problem making the audience experience the character's feelings and emotions. As Chris' parents, William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden are probably the least interesting characters in the entire film. I've always thought Hurt was overrated and I stick by that opinion. Harden has one emotional scene where she wakes up thinking that Chris is calling out to her after he had been gone for quite some time. It's a heart-breaking thought for a parent to think their child is in trouble somewhere they can't find, and Harden does a fine job in that scene. As Chris' sister Carine, Jena Malone reminded me of my sister. Carine is the kind of sister that always supports her brother and looks up to him, and Malone brought a voice to hert hat rings true.

There are a few characters that Chris meets during his travels. From this point on, I'll call Chris...Alex. He first meets Wayne, brought to life by Vince Vaughn, who plays his usual laid-back self. Next, Alex befriends a couple of rubber-tramps played by Brian Dierker and Catherine Keener. The three of them create an instant bond that feels like they've known each other forever. Alex then meets Tracy, a young girl played by Kristen Stewart. There's a touch of romance there. Not a lot, but just enough to show there is a connection between the two of them. Hal Holbrook plays Ron Franz, an oldman that looks after Alex for a period of time. The scenes between Holbrook and Hirsch are very touching and might require you to bring some kleenex. The best thing about all of these interactions is the way the actors make you believe that Alex represents something that is missing in all of their lives. Some great acting at work.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Sean Penn adapted the work of John Krakauer into thescreenplay. Some of the dialogue between Hurt and Harden can come off as a little fake and boring at times. The story itself is fascinating. The way pieces of Alex's travels would come together is very interesting.

One thing Penn seriously needs to work on is his pacing. At two and a half hours, some scenes could have been trimmed. On a plus side, this is Penn's most visually stunning film to date. The cinematography of all the places Alex made stops in is what grabbed me the most. There are some truly amazing shots of the country and mountains, etc.

In the end, Into The Wild basically just points out to us that we have choices and we can change our lives if we wanted to, just like Chris/Alex did. I will also note that the final image in the film is very haunting and has kind of stuck with me since I saw it this past Wednesday night. Just warning you!

Alecc B. on "In The Valley Of Elah"

Next year, George W. Bush will no longer be sitting behind the desk in the Oval Office. It’s a comforting thought, but the next man, or woman, to sit there has a lot of cleaning up to do. One of the biggest shit-storms that needs to be resolved is getting our troops out of Iraq. Easier said than done, but the longer the military stays out there, the more damage will be done to them, physical and psychological.

In The Valley Of Elah is the latest film to tackle the subject of the war in Iraq. Director Paul Haggis chose this story to tell as his follow-up to his award-winning Crash. There aren’t many similarities between the two films, but one thing they do have in common is strong writing for a great cast.

PLOT

Hank Deerfield gets a call from the military, saying his son, Mike, has gone AWOL. Hank, not knowing that his son was back in the states until then, sets out to find him. Upon arriving at his son’s military base, Hank knows something is not right, and he must work his way through lies and crack-whores to find out where his son is. Okay, so maybe there aren’t any crack-whores, but there are strippers involved. I know, not the same thing. Whatever.

ACTING

Tommy Lee Jones can act circles around anyone. Sure, he basically plays himself in every movie, but the man is a class act. As Hank, Jones expresses enough of what he’s feeling without having to speak. When he does speak though, he drops gems. Susan Sarandon plays his wife and mother of Mike, Joan. Sarandon is another actress you can add to the list of greats. She’s guaranteed to make you cry a couple of times here, which is effortless for her to do, especially in Dead Man Walking. Have any of you seen that film? Man-o-man, that movie will make any guy weep. Believe that! Charlize Theron plays Det. Emily Sanders, who befriends Hank and helps him. Theron’s character deals with adversity throughout the film, from the male detectives in her department to the military police. Theron holds up well against the rest of the cast. It doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous, even when she’s dressed down. Jonathan Tucker, as Mike, has very little screen-time and is mostly shown through flashbacks. He’s decent in this role. Wes Chatham is very effective as one of the more haunted soldiers, Corporal Steve Penning. Jason Patric plays Lt. Kirklander like he does all of his other roles, which is very reserved. James Franco, Josh Brolin, and Frances Fisher all show up for a couple of scenes and perform their small roles well.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Paul Haggis developed the story for In The Valley Of Elah with Mark Boal. The plot is pretty simple, but enhanced by good dialogue. If I were to pitch this film, I’d say it’s Courage Under Fire meets A Few Good Men. Elah goes to some dark places, including some disorderly conduct from soldiers dealing with injured prisoners and dead bodies in Iraq. Some twisted stuff. The weakest subplot has to deal with Theron’s character and her young son, especially a scene that comes after the climax. They melted some Kraft on that scene. Pure cheese.

Haggis has been involved in many projects over the past few years. He wrote the scripts for Million Dollar Baby, Casino Royale, and The Last Kiss, to name a few. With the exception of Royale, Haggis seems to have a knack for writing drama. This is evident when it comes to his directing as well. Elah has a nice flow to it. It’s not fast-paced film, but it’s never boring. The investigation of what happened to Hank’s son keeps you interested, and Haggis has a fantastic cast that carries the movie along without any extra help from fancy camerawork. This is not to say Haggis is a lazy hack, it’s just that he knows what he’s doing.

I could’ve done without the extremely corny song they play at the end. It makes the final image a little overbearing. But, as a follow-up to Crash, In The Valley Of Elah won’t disappoint anyone looking for a good old-fashioned investigation drama.
