Can Will Smith fail? Well, there will come a point in all actors' careers when a movie that they star in tanks at the box office. That really hasn't happened to Smith yet. His worst movies are Wild Wild West, Bad Boys 2, and Men In Black 2, and each of those still made a ton of money. I guess Ali would be his smallest grossing film since he became a superstar, and he received his first Academy Award nomination for that.
Smith has proven he's capable of bringing in audiences, no matter what kind of movie he's in. With I Am Legend, Smith faces one of his most complicated roles as the last man on earth, and succeeds once again.
PLOT
A cure for cancer has been created. Thousands of people become free of this disease, but then the unexpected happens. The cure takes a turn for the worse, and everyone who used to have cancer are now dealing with something that is much worse. An infection begins to spread, and everyone on the planet turns into a vampire/zombie-type mutant that comes out at night to feed. Only one man is immune to this outbreak, and his name is Robert Neville.
ACTING
Will Smith has become "that guy". He is what Tom Cruise was before he went crazy. He knows how to pick his roles carefully and Legend is a great exercise for him. Besides having a dog in the film, Smith is mostly on-screen by himself. Even when he's not fighting CGI vampire/zombie-type mutants (Let's just call them "vambies"!), he still holds your interest. Smith conveys, with ease, how Neville is barely hanging on to his sanity. Imagine if you were all alone in the world. Not a fun thought.
WRITING & DIRECTING
Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman handled the responsibility of adapting Richard Matheson's famous novel into a Will Smith event flick. The story moves along at a good pace. There are definitely a couple of scenes where Smith is given some really strong material to work with.
Director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the underrated Constantine, gives I Am Legend a very eerie look. There are plenty of shots of empty streets that will creep you out. Think about how much energy is pumping through New York City on a daily basis and then try and picture all of it gone. Nothing but abandoned cars and silence. Lawrence definitely has a knack for setting the mood. There are some seriously suspenseful scenes throughout the film as well.
Aside from a pretty big continuity error, my only real problem with Legend was that the vambies looked a little too CGI at times. They really stuck out, but it didn't hurt the film that much.
Will Smith is sure to dominate the box office once again this weekend, and at least I Am Legend can be added to his list of good moneymakers.
Overall Review: *** stars

Smith: Damn it Fred! Damn it!
