A Superhero Suprise in I Am Legend

A Superhero Suprise in I Am Legend
Source: Superhero Hype!
December 21, 2007

This will be old news to many, but now that I Am Legend has been in theaters for a week, we thought we'd answer all the e-mails we've gotten. We didn't want to spoil the easter egg put into I Am Legend by writer/producer Akiva Goldsman and let fans discover it on their own!

In the beginning of the film, Will Smith is hunting a deer and when he walks through a deserted Times Square, fans get to see a quick glimpse of a big
Batman vs. Superman billboard. It was meant as a joke by Goldsman, but some fans are wondering if it means a Batman vs. Superman movie is already in development -- not so.

Goldsman was once attached to a real
Batman vs. Superman movie, but the script didn't get the green light. He also wrote Batman Forever and Batman & Robin.

In the movie, even though it is 2012, the virus hit in 2009, so Goldsman thought about which movies "could" possibly come to theaters in '09. In the
video store Will Smith goes into you'll also see fakeGreen Lantern and Teen Titans posters.

More GI JOE NEWS

G.I. Joe's Storm Shadow and Scarlett Chosen?
If knowing is half the battle, then knowing the rumor is...one-fourth the battle?
We already know Ray Park and Sienna Miller are part of Stephen Sommers' G.I. Joe cast. How about a little old-fashioned rumormongering about a pair of potential additions?

Latino Review claims that "proven sources" have fed them the inside scoop on two of the faces we can expect to see alongside Miller and Park when Joe hits the screen -- and who they'll be playing.

According to the report, Storm Shadow -- the Cobra equivalent of Joe's resident ninja, Snake Eyes -- will be played by Korean film sensation Byung-Hun Lee, star of Winter Sonata and Capcom's Lost Planet game. Storm Shadow's bio, courtesy of Latino Review:

Storm Shadow's real name is Thomas S. Arashikage. Best known as the Cobra Commander's ninja bodyguard and assassin at times, he is the only member of the team to change sides several times, conflicted in loyalties between Cobra, G.I. Joe and his long relationship with his swordbrother Snake Eyes.

He usually wears a white uniform and mask. When out of his uniform, he is shown to be Japanese, with black hair and dark eyes. In 2007, the character's creator Larry Hama revealed an alternate name for the character, Tomisaburo Arashikage, in the solo series Storm Shadow. Although Tomisaburo is a single Japanese name, it may stand in for his middle initial in: Tommy/Thomas S Arashikage.

Latino Review's sources also say that Rachel Nichols, the Alias and P2 star recently rumored to be joining the cast of Star Trek XI, has also signed up for Joe duty -- and that she'll be playing Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara, Cobra's red-haired Master Sergeant.

Nothing wrong with running this picture one more time.

More on the character:

She was the first female action figure in the G.I. Joe toy line and is also the only member of the original team to see much action in both cartoon and comic incarnations. The official line on Scarlett is that her full name is Shana M. O'Hara. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia. Although she is as adept with standard weapons as any of her comrades, her weapon of choice is the crossbow, which fires various bolts with specialized functions. Her rank is Master Sergeant, and she serves from time to time as team leader. Her primary specialty for the team is counter intelligence and is additionally skilled in martial arts and acrobatics.

So there you have it, Joe fans. If you still have your old action figures, you can remove them from their protective casings, hold them up against pictures of Lee and Nichols, and decide how you feel about all this. We're still waiting for Mike Myers or Billy Connolly to get the call for Destro. (Just kidding! We think.)

Will Smith Sets a Legendary Record -- $76.5 Million!
December 16, 2007

iamlegendww.jpg"The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend and ComingSoon.net's The Weekend Warrior has a full analysis. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

In one of the most astounding weekends since the summer, two
movies opened and far exceeded all expectations, predictions and studio tracking as Will Smith opened his latest sci-fi action flick I Am Legend (Warner Bros.) in December with an estimated gross of $76.5 million in regular and IMAX theatres, an average of over $21,000 per theater, setting a new opening record for Smith as well as the new record for December. Even more surprising might be the success of Alvin and the Chipmunks (Fox) in finding a huge family audience to the tune of $45 million, becoming one of the top 8 openers for the month of December as well.

Alecc B. on "I Am Legend"

Can Will Smith fail? Well, there will come a point in all actors' careers when a movie that they star in tanks at the box office. That really hasn't happened to Smith yet. His worst movies are Wild Wild West, Bad Boys 2, and Men In Black 2, and each of those still made a ton of money. I guess Ali would be his smallest grossing film since he became a superstar, and he received his first Academy Award nomination for that.

Smith has proven he's capable of bringing in audiences, no matter what kind of movie he's in. With I Am Legend, Smith faces one of his most complicated roles as the last man on earth, and succeeds once again.

PLOT

A cure for cancer has been created. Thousands of people become free of this disease, but then the unexpected happens. The cure takes a turn for the worse, and everyone who used to have cancer are now dealing with something that is much worse. An infection begins to spread, and everyone on the planet turns into a vampire/zombie-type mutant that comes out at night to feed. Only one man is immune to this outbreak, and his name is Robert Neville.

ACTING

Will Smith has become "that guy". He is what Tom Cruise was before he went crazy. He knows how to pick his roles carefully and Legend is a great exercise for him. Besides having a dog in the film, Smith is mostly on-screen by himself. Even when he's not fighting CGI vampire/zombie-type mutants (Let's just call them "vambies"!), he still holds your interest. Smith conveys, with ease, how Neville is barely hanging on to his sanity. Imagine if you were all alone in the world. Not a fun thought.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman handled the responsibility of adapting Richard Matheson's famous novel into a Will Smith event flick. The story moves along at a good pace. There are definitely a couple of scenes where Smith is given some really strong material to work with.

Director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the underrated Constantine, gives I Am Legend a very eerie look. There are plenty of shots of empty streets that will creep you out. Think about how much energy is pumping through New York City on a daily basis and then try and picture all of it gone. Nothing but abandoned cars and silence. Lawrence definitely has a knack for setting the mood. There are some seriously suspenseful scenes throughout the film as well.

Aside from a pretty big continuity error, my only real problem with Legend was that the vambies looked a little too CGI at times. They really stuck out, but it didn't hurt the film that much.

Will Smith is sure to dominate the box office once again this weekend, and at least I Am Legend can be added to his list of good moneymakers.

Plot Summary: Hurtling down the track, careening around, over and through the competition, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is a natural behind the wheel. Born to race cars, Speed is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer—whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill.

Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed's thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company's maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits. If Speed won't drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line.

The only way for Speed to save his family's business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother's life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Based on the classic series created by anime pioneer Tatsuo Yoshida, the live-action "Speed Racer" will showcase the kind of revolutionary visual effects and cutting-edge storytelling that have become the benchmarks of the Wachowski brothers' films.

Alecc B. on "The Golden Compass"

Hollywood is trying so hard to create the next Lord Of The Rings trilogy. We've seen plenty of imitators over the years, including Eragon, Bridge To Terabithia, and the first installment of The Chronicles Of Narnia, which happened to be the only one out of the three that found success. The second entry in the Narnia series, Prince Caspian, comes out next summer.

Until next summer though, we have The Golden Compass invading theatres today, just in time for kids to force their parents to take them to see it again and again over the holiday break. I'll tell you right now, this ain't got nothin' on the Rings films. But it's not a complete waste of time either.

PLOT

In an alternate world, things are pretty much as they are here, except that in this world, there are flying witches and talking animals. Actually, it's nothing like our world. I'm having difficulty describing the plot for Compass, so the simplest way for me to lay out the plot would be to say that there is a young girl named Lyra that is trying to find her kidnapped friend. She's assisted by an armored polar bear and Sam Elliott's mustache. Oh, and dust is a pretty big deal.

ACTING

Dakota Blue Richards has a lot of spunk as Lyra. She carries the film well and doesn't bore you like the kids of Narnia. Daniel Craig plays Lord Asriel, Lyra's uncle who is obsessed with dust! He has a few scenes but nothing to write home about. He's just a cool dude. Nicole Kidman shows up with all of her elegance, as usual, to play Marisa Coulter. Lyra looks up to Coulter but soon realizes that there is more to this red-haired beauty than meets the eye. Kidman is a great actress and she's just gorgeous. She has that classic look to her, like Audrey Hepburn. Sam Elliott plays Lee, and you know what to expect. You'll get that Southern drawl and thick mustache that only Elliott can give you. Super-sexy Eva Green shows up as the witch Serafina. She's pretty good here and oh-so-nice to look at.

Now, as far the talking animals go, they're called "daemons" in this film. Daemons are part of everyone's soul. Every man, woman, and child has their own daemon. Here are a few of the voices behind these animals:

Pantalaimon - Freddie Highmore
Iorek - Ian McKellan
Ragnar - Ian McShane
Stelmaria - Kristin Scott Thomas
Hester - Kathy Bates

WRITING & DIRECTING

Chris Weitz adapted Philip Pullman's novel into the film we see now. I know religious folk are calling The Golden Compass out because Pullman is an Athiest and the book supposedly promotes Atheism. Weitz has stated that he stripped all of that stuff out of his screenplay so everyone can enjoy the film. So let's get to the screenplay.

The story was a bit muddled for me for a good chunk of the movie. There was all this talk of dust and Gobblers and all this shit. I wasn't bored, because the theatre I saw Compass in was exceptionally loud. I definitely felt that the story was lacking something.

This is the first story of a trilogy of books, by the way, so the ending of this film leaves it open for a sequel. Just letting you know so that when the credits roll, you don't throw your hands up and yell, "What the fuck?!"

As for the special effects, The Golden Compass has tons of eye-candy for lovers of CGI. All of the demons in the films are completely computer-generated, even when they're not talking, and you quickly forget they're not real. The stand-out sequence of the film involves some polar bear-on-polar bear action. No, not that kind. Weirdo. I'm talking about a brawl! It's pretty kick ass!

Weitz has come a long way since directing American Pie. I believe he is more than capable to handle big budget flicks like Compass in the future, but he needs some assistance when it comes to writing. On smaller films, like Pie or the underrated In Good Company, Weitz seems a little more comfortable with the dialogue and such. As his first event movie, Compass is not a complete failure. It just needed a little more magic in the storytelling to make it seem like the film was not relying on the magic of CGI.

Budgeted at a reported $180 million, The Golden Compass better pray it makes bank quickly, because just around the corner a little film called I Am Legend will be coming out. We all know that no one gets in Will Smith's way, otherwise he'd have to say, "Oh hell naw!"

DiVad's TRAILER NEWS UPDATES: INDY 4, DARK KNIGHT, STAR TREK

Indiana Jones, Dark Knight & Star Trek Trailer Updates
Source: Notfabio
December 3, 2007

ComingSoon.net has learned new details about the upcoming teaser trailers for three of next year's highly-anticipated movies. Keep in mind that the online debuts for these trailers will probably be earlier in the week of release for the movie it is attached to, and that the trailer may not be shown with every print of the film.

First up, the first trailer for Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is now planned for a debut in February. While we don't know for sure with which movie it will show, Paramount's biggest film that month is The Spiderwick Chronicles, so keep your eye on that one. Of course, it's possible Paramount will decide to debut footage earlier during the Super Bowl, but we're not sure.

In just two weeks, on December 14, Warner Bros. will release the teaser trailer for Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight in standard theaters with I Am Legend. As was previously announced, the studio will be showing the 7-minute opening scene of "Dark Knight" before the screenings of "Legend" in IMAX.

And Star Trek fans won't have to wait long for the first teaser for the J.J. Abrams-directed film, as Paramount is planning a debut with the Abrams-produced monster movie Cloverfield, coming to theaters on January 18, 2008.

ATARIO'S: NEW MOVIE RANT OF THE MONTH: "LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD" UNRATED VERSION

For those of you that waited like I did , and for those of you that
are going say something like...."I can't believe you never saw that when it came
out, you fucking hack film critic ! "Me I waited , I waited and waited , LOL, tired of waiting for what I have to say?As a huge Hugh Die hard fan , and the excitement of a 4th film being released,I was all excited! Then, talking to Divad I heard some disturbing news.I mean, I knew the film was rated PG-13 ( oh God why) but I didn't
know they where taking it so far. They did things like cut the film down to
make it that rating and cut out the "yippee-ki-yay motherfucker" with some background noise. So either out of sheer brilliance, or maybe like Narc would say , "cause I was lazy" I waited for the unrated version. Fucking Holly shit that was cool version to come out this week, and to tell you it was great. In essence it wasn't really a true Die hard film. It could of been called "The fucking Mac kid and Bruce go to see Silent bob movie" and still would of made an ass load of money. Be honest with yourselves film heads! John McClane was still funny as shit and was able to take an inhuman amount of abuse, For God sakes man , He rides
Star Scream , I kept hoping it would transform ! That would add to my theory that any movies is better when there's a transforming robot in it ! I didn't care for the whole,"I learned to fly a chopper".("Jr you know how to fly") bite off of Last crusade . LOL ("fly yes , Land no !!!)- still funny .But I still really enjoyed all the extra violence & cursing being put back into the film .

OK now let talk about Timothy Olyphant, you know who I'm talking about , are you
having an oh that guy moment ? Timothy Olyphant a.k.a. Todd Gaines a.k.a. Thomas Gabriel . Do I have to put him in a frigging Video game movie for you to know who the guy with the funny name is . He's agent 47 in the up coming shit feast "Hitman" we re's fucking Chuck Norris when you need him.His character is rather weak in the movie , I mean the Chinese girl in the film was great Maggie Q,, I mean you can drive her thru a building , literally thru it and she'll still be able
to get up and try to kill the mac kid , I wonder if PC sent her ? Ever think of that angel ? So as in any movie that he doesn't direct , Kevin Smith was basically
point less in the movie , Dare Devil !!! It would of been cool if they would of brought
back Sam Jackson to play that part,Fucking Zeus on the Internet , All angry yelling shit like there mother fucking snakes on the Internet McClane.

Also the character of Lucy McClane was better then Bring back the ex wife ,
I mean if the marriage hasn't worked by now I think its time to give up .The DVD is awesome. Watch the Fully loaded mountain due version , with all the sugar and the sperm killing yellow # 5 still in the can. I recommend it , even if you enjoyed
the diet Pepsi , venison, The DVD comes with the Theatrical version also .

Go watch it , Click on " unrated version" and enjoy !

Atario Has spoken !!! My Loyal film heads !

Alecc B. on "This Christmas"

When I first saw the trailer for This Christmas, I said to myself, "FUCK!" The reason behind me using such foul language was that I felt this film seemed very similar to a script my friend Darryll and I wrote. This made me upset, angry even. Hell, I was tornado of anger, swirling about. Then I saw Christmas.

After viewing this family film, I'm happy to say that there is only one thing in our script that needs to be changed, with the similarities ending there. Phew!

PLOT

The Whitfields always get together for Christmas. Everyone gathers at Ma Dear's house to be a family for at least once a year. But we all know that this Christmas will be different. Loaded with surprises, singing, dancing, and more dancing, this is one holiday film you don't wanna miss!! Did I sell you on it with that? THOUGHT SO!

ACTING

Chris Brown tries prove to us that he can act as well as sing and dance his ass off as Baby. For the most part, he is charming and definitely a better actor than Usher, but he does struggle with a couple of the more dramatic scenes. Loretta Devine plays Mama Whitfiled, otherwise referred to as Ma Dear. I never liked Devine. I feel that every movie she's in, she tries too hard and fails each time. As Ma Dear's man Joe, Delroy Lindo is as cool as he always is. Idris Elba plays the oldest brother Quentin. I've been seeing Elba more often these days, and I must say he's got the same cool factor as Lindo in this flick. Columbus Short plays Claude, another sibling who's also a marine. Short has a natural charisma that works well with the rest of the cast. Regina King plays one of the sisters, Lisa. King is always great to watch, but even more-so here. I have no idea when she developed her fantastic body, but she shows it off a couple of times here and I am grateful for it. As Lisa's husband Malcome, Laz Alonso has some fun playing a guy that still thinks the world is a place where your woman will do everything for you, including cutting your dinner meat. Sharon Leal plays another sister, Kelli, the sassy independent woman of today. Leal is sexy as all hell and has a few funny moments too. Mekhi Phifer plays Kelli's holiday crush, Gerald. They have a nice chemistry together. Lauren London plays the youngest sister Melanie. This girl is just too cute for words, and she can act, which helps. Keith Robinson plays her boyfriend Devean and has a couple of good moments to shine. All in all, the whole family feels like a real family, with the exception of the weak Devine. Special shout-out goes to a superstar on the rise, Tiana Soleil. She has performance near the end of the film with Brown and handled her business! BOOM!

WRITING & DIRECTING

The man behind the script and camera for This Christmas is Preston A. Whitmore II. The script is good for the most part. There are a ton of clichés that I could've done without though. Like the family member who is in trouble and gets bailed out at the right time. Or the family member with a big secret who thinks that the secret is best kept hidden but soon realizes otherwise. There are a few others, but you get the picture. The cast is really what saves the script.

As a director, Whitmore has some skill. Christmas is a good-looking film. The pacing is well done and the movie doesn't put you to sleep. The final scene is cute little rehash of an earlier one, only this time it needed some definite trimming.

This Christmas is a good family film. It's not great and doesn't bring anything new to the genre, but if you're looking for a lighthearted time at the movies, you should check it out.

Alecc B. on "The Mist"

For those of you who don't know, The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie of all time. Since that film is pretty much perfect, I will give any other film directed by Frank Darabont a chance. Okay, so I never saw The Majestic, but I did catch The Green Mile, which like Redemption, was an adaptation of a Stephen King story, and that was one of the breeziest three hour films I have ever seen.

Darabont has now returned to theatres with The Mist, which was also a work of King. Fear not, this ain't The Fog. However, while being very twisted at times, this flick does manage to drop the ball on more than one occasion.

PLOT

David Drayton makes movie posters for a living. One night, a freakish storm sends a monstrous tree right through his house, destroying the room where he keeps his work. Not only that, the neighbor's tree crashed down on David's boathouse, smashing it to nothing.

So the next day David, his son, and the neighbor all take a ride to the local supermarket to pick up supplies. While there, a mysterious mist begins to engulf the whole town, trapping everyone inside. Fear and paranoia begin to set in, leaving David no choice but to rip off his shirt and yell, "I AM BEOWULF!" Oops, wrong movie.

ACTING

Thomas Jane actually did a good job here as David and didn't make me laugh unintentionally. There are a couple of moments where he gets emotional that reminded me of Mel Gibson. What I mean is that sometimes, when Gibson has to emote, it might feel a little forced but it still works for the scene. Jane manages to pull that off here and is convincing in the more heroic moments as well. As David's son Billy, Nathan Gamble is pretty impressive. We all know kid actors can be annoying in horror flicks, but not this time. Andre Braugher plays David's neighbor, Brent, a hot-shot lawyer from the city. Braugher is always great in any role he takes and delivers once again in this flick. Alexa Davalos plays Sally, a clerk at the supermarket. She's decent in this role. As Sally's love interest Wayne, Sam Witwer plays this troubled military soldier well, although his eyebrows are distracting at times. Marcia Gay Harden takes the role of Mrs. Carmody, the religious nut who believes God is behind all that is happening. She will get on your nerves, but that's not because Harden's performance is flawed, but because the character will really get under your skin and make you want to choke the shit out of her. Laurie Holden plays Amanda, someone who becomes part of David's inner circle and becomes sort of a mother figure for Billy. Holden jumps back and forth with being strong and then afraid with ease. Toby Jones plays Ollie, a supervisor at the market who also becomes David's right-hand man. Jones gives a good performance here and you definitely root for him. Special shout-out goes to Darabont-regular William Sadler hamming it up as Jim, one of the local rednecks.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Frank Darabont played both writer and director for The Mist, and he's hit and miss for both. As far as the script goes, you won't be bored. However, there are times when the dialogue is just not working. I even found myself yelling out lines that would have been more amusing to use, well at least to me anyway. The revelation behind the mist was a bit hokey for me too. There are some tense moments though.

Darabont switched his directing style up a bit with this one, opting for a lot of handheld camera-work that was very effective in building the tension. Considering the fact that this movie was shot on a low-budget (reported: $17 million), I should let some of the weak special effects slide this time around, but there are a few scenes that have just unacceptable CGI for a film coming out in 2007. I would have rather they just not show what the characters are looking at and just get facial expressions from the actors like the movies of old. No lie, some of the special effects are laughable.

Now, there are a few things that save this film from being a disaster. Jane in the lead is one reason to check it out. Another reason is that there are some truly suspenseful sequences, the most uncomfortable one being when some of the folks inside the supermarket put the blame for everything that's taking place on a certain someone. Let's just say things get ugly.

The final reason for seeing The Mist is the ending. You're either going to love or hate the conclusion, but you won't be able to deny how brave it is.
