It's Confirmed: Del Toro For The Hobbit

It's confirmed, we mean it this time. Guillermo del Toro, New Line, MGM, Peter Jackson and all other interested parties have definitely, finally made a deal, and Empire's favourite Mexican will soon be heading to New Zealand for four years to make two back-to-back Hobbit movies.

The announcement of perhaps the world's worst-kept secret comes after months of the principals discussing the idea in public, leaking information and generally paving the way for today's news. Now it's confirmed that Del Toro will be moving to NZ after he finishes work on Hellboy 2, and expects to be there for about four years. That means we're looking at release dates in 2011 and 2012, assuming shooting starts next year, for The Hobbit and an in-between-quel set in the 77-odd years that pass between that story and The Lord of the Rings.

The films don't have a definite planned start date yet, nor a script, although it's expected that Jackson and his Lord of the Rings collaborators Phillippa Boyens and Fran Walsh will be involved in that. It is confirmed, however (again surprisingly precisely no one) that Weta will be involved, and that New Zealand will once again be doubling for Middle Earth.

Expect the casting rumour mill to start churning any minute, but for a few moments at least, let's enjoy the knowledge that The Hobbit is definitely happening and leave it at that.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Someone has seen Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Jeff Wells has the scoop from someone on the Crystal Skull team over in Spielberg-land (read: I’m not sure how much you can believe this over-the-top positive report), and here are the highlights:

  • “The best of the Indy sequels.”
  • “The film has the strongest supporting cast of the sequels.”
  • “There are many breakneck set pieces, with a protracted jungle chase being particularly memorable. As well as being evocative of the truck chase from the first movie.”
  • “…an ending that any longtime diehard fan of the films could only dream about. Expect a particularly resounding reaction in the theater.”

You can read the full report on Hollywood-Elsewhere.If those kind of quotes don’t get you excited than I dont know what will… oh, maybe some new production photos? A bunch of new production photos have also surfaced on the web, most of which appeared in an unnamed foreign magazine:

March 21, 2008

Paramount Pictures has released the first two photos of Ray Park as Snake Eyes in the Stephen Sommers-directed G.I. Joe, coming to theaters on August 7, 2009.

"He's the world's greatest ninja, but he's also next-generation. He's not afraid to use a sword one second, and a split-second later he's pulling out his Glock," Sommers told USA Today. "His chief nemesis is arguably the world's other great ninja, Storm Shadow. The two grew up together, were blood brothers and now are mortal enemies."

Sommers stressed that the movie is an origins story, so his challenge is to explain why the bad guy wears a metal mask, why Snake Eyes doesn't talk and other strange things kids took for granted. "For people who know nothing about it, it'll make sense," Sommers said. "And to people who love this stuff, it'll show where they all came from."

Adapted by Stuart Beattie, the action-adventure also stars Dennis Quaid, Channing Tatum, Sienna Miller, Rachel Nichols, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Said Taghmaoui, Marlon Wayans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Arnold Vosloo and Christopher Eccleston.

The New Indiana Jones Poster!

The New Indiana Jones Poster!

Source: USA Today
March 10, 2008

The USA Today has debuted the new poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, coming to theaters on May 22. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the action-adventure stars Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, Karen Allen, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent. The newspaper had this to say about the poster:

The new poster for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull confirms something alien is afoot.

The
first poster for the film (due May 22) featured part of the title relic, but there was always something odd about the eye socket. In the follow-up, also by sci-fi/fantasy movie artist Drew Struzan, it's clear the skull is not at all human. Add to that the recent trailer, with its shot of a crate labeled "Roswell, New Mexico 1947," and you don't need to be a professor of archaeology to put the pieces together.

Other clues: Looks as if our hero will face his least-favorite animal and the locals at some Maya ruins. Karen Allen (who also was in 1981's original) seems to be enjoying herself, though.
