X-Men Origins: Wolverine!

First Look at X-Men Origins: Wolverine!
Source: USA Today
February 14, 2008

USA Today has published this first look at Hugh Jackman as Logan in X-Men Origins: Wolverine! And some quotes...

The film will trace Wolverine's past as he discovers the world of mutants and, ultimately, the ominous Weapon X program, which turns people into living weapons.

Jackman is tight-lipped on plot details, though he says the film will hardly be a one-mutant story.

Wolverine's nemesis Sabretooth "is going to play a big part in it. And there will be a good bit of cameos" of new and familiar mutants, he says. "But you can't give too much away, because fans are pretty hard-core. Their expectations go up a level every time you come out with a new film."

Directed by Gavin Hood and co-starring Liev Schreiber, X-Men Origins: Wolverine hits theaters on May 1, 2009.

MIGHTY MUGGS!

Iv never been one to get into the "URBAN VINYL". Theres been a few pieces here and there that have caught my eye but for whatever reason I never gave in. Well something caught my eye today that may have changed that. MIGHTY MUGGS have made a line of star wars figures that are so much fun, I had to pick up the StormTrooper. I really wanted VADER but Im sure that was the first to go ,they only had one trooper BobaFett and DarthMaul. This has the potential to get me started in Vinyl now. Its only a matter of time before I start heading over to KIDROBOT. Theres also a great looking MARVEL line coming up for MightyMuggs. If theres anyone that collects Vinyls and would like to drop some recommendations on whats hot please do.

All hail mighty MEGATRON!

Alecc B. on "Cloverfield"

Does anyone even remember 1998's Godzilla? Didn't think so. After all the hype on that flick, including teaser-trailers a year before the movie was even released, Godzilla stormed the multiplexes and left a bad taste in many mouths. There hasn't been a monster-attacking-a-major-city-movie in quite some time. King Kong doesn't count, he's a big ape.

Now we have Cloverfield, a film that can best be described as "The Blair Witch Project to the 25th Power". If done right though, that's not a bad thing. I feel that Cloverfield was done right.

PLOT

Rob Hawkins is going to Japan for work. His family and friends throw him a surprise going-away party. While drinking it up and partying the night away in New York City, an attack happens and everyone begins to run for their lives from a rather large creature. I'm sure this was not the going-away party Rob had in mind.

ACTING

Michael Stahl-David does well as the lead, Rob. Certain events take place and the way he reacts to them are very believable. Mike Vogel plays Rob's brother Jason. He's pretty laid back and that works for the character. Jessica Lucas fills the role of Lily, Jason's woman. Lucas gives one of the stronger performances here. Odette Yustman plays Beth, Rob's friend who he's been secretly in love with for a loooooong time. Their chemistry is very good. T.J. Miller plays Hud, Rob's best friend. I have to say that Miller was probably the weakest link here, even though he provided my best line for the review. Lizzy Caplan plays Marlena, Hud's crush. She's pretty good.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Drew Goddard wrote Cloverfield and kept things pretty simple, but effective. The best thing about it all is that their is no explanation on where this monster has come from. The story is being told from the perspective of people just trying to survive. Some of the dialogue feels forced at times, but not enough to really hurt the film.

It's kind of hard to critique the directing here, because the entire film is shot from a video camera, a la Blair Witch. Matt Reeves directed and kept the film moving at all times. There are a couple of clear shots of the monster but they keep it hidden for the most part, which is better. I mean, these people are running for their lives, they don't really have too much time to keep the camera still for more than a few seconds. In fact, the first attack is very reminiscent of 9/11, with people running from clouds of smoke from fallen buildings. Pretty eerie.

I was tense for most of the film. The concept of shooting the film the way they did brought a fresh approach to this type of flick. The subway sequence was probably one of the scariest scenes. My favorite scene has to be when they're just walking in the quiet street, the monster pops up, and all of a sudden the army comes out of nowhere, shooting guns, missiles, and tanks for a good couple of minutes. It was so loud in the theatre. I said to myself, "Very niiice."

Now, if you are one of the people that disliked Blair Witch, and I know there are many of you, I would recommend staying away from this flick. The camera shakes...a lot. If you have a tendency to get dizzy from handheld camera work, I repeat, stay away from this flick!

Personally, I would have ended the film in the helicopter, you'll know what I'm talking about if and when you see it. That is one intense sequence. As a whole though, Cloverfield kept my interest throughout and has become a nice entry into the monster-movie genre.

Best Line:

Miller: Uh, Rob, this store is closed man.

Alecc B. on "Rambo"

Before Jason Bourne, John McClane, and Jack Bauer, there was John Rambo. This was the Vietnam vet who caused hell in a small town. This was the man who shot arrows with explosives attached to the heads. This was the man who has been sorely missed by people like me who love action films of the 80's. Well, I'm happy to say that Rambo is back, and more pissed off than ever!

PLOT

Some doctors are looking to "save lives" in Burma, a place that has become a warzone, with soldiers killing women and children and shit like that. These docs ask Rambo to drop them off, seeing as he knows the river best. After some persuasion, he gives them a lift.

While the docs are helping the wounded, an attack takes place and they are taken hostage. Now it's up to Rambo to let everyone know what mutha fuckin' time it is!!!

ACTING

You should know that a movie like Rambo is not something that is seen for the acting. With that being said, Sylvester Stallone reprises his role as the ultimate killing machine with ease. Yeah, he's old. So what?! He's still one bad ass mo fo that you do not want to mess with. There really is no point discussing the performances of the other actors in the film because no one cares. This film is all about Rambo. That's what we pay to see.

WRITING & DIRECTING

Art Monterastelli helped Stallone write this latest installment of the Rambo series. Considering the fact that the final product clocks in at just over 90 minutes, with 60 of those minutes being filled with action, I'd say that on paper the film was probably really short. For this flick though, it works perfectly and there is just enough build-up to make you hate the bad guys and count the seconds until Stallone starts ventilating domes and splitting wigs.

As Stallone's latest directorial effort, Rambo is also his best. The action is shot well and very exciting. It's also quite violent. I'm talking about beheadings, limbs and heads being blown off, stomachs getting gutted, throats ripped out, etc. Harm also falls upon a couple of children, which was a little shocking to tell you the truth. I'm surprised the ratings board let that slide. Besides being the goriest entry into the series, Rambo is also the most gratuitously violent action flick I've seen in a long time.

2008 has begun, and Rambo met all of my expectations and then some. Even though the final scene was a little lame, I was thoroughly entertained watching this throwback to the shoot 'em up films of the 80's, when studios didn't give a damn about censors and gave us fun, ultra-violent action flicks because they knew that's what we wanted. If you can't appreciate a film like that, then Rambo is not for you. However, if you're like me and love balls-to-the-wall action done well, then get your ass to the theatre and enjoy some high octane carnage!

Best Lines:

Stallone: When pushed, killing is as easy as breathing.
